Mattie S. Brown

LAUREL, Md. – Mattie Lee Saunders Brown, 75, formerly of Gatesville and Norfolk, Va., died August 30, 2005, in Althea Woods Nursing Home, Silver Springs.

Survivors include her husband, Pearlie Brown of Norfolk; daughter, Brinda Albert of Laurel; foster daughter, Shelia Hall; son, Randy Saunders of Elizabeth City; sister, Margaret Saunders of Hackensack, N.J., five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A funeral was conducted Sunday in Mt. Zion COGIC, Camden, N.C. by

Pastor Glenn Sawyer. Burial was in Westlawn Cemetery, Elizabeth City. Stallings Funeral Home, Elizabeth City was in charge.

Mary F. Asbell

SUFFOLK, Va. –

Mary Francis Asbell, 71, a native of Hertford County, died September 1, 2005, at Obici Hospital. She was the widow of Otto Asbell.

Mrs. Asbell was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

Survivors include her mother, Florence Nixon of Suffolk; daughters, Evangeline Thomas of Suffolk and Delores Jane Peele of Roanoke Rapids; son, Timothy R. Asbell of Nelson County, Va.; sister, Frances G. Mathais of Suffolk, Stella Mae Trout of Pensacola, Fla., and Betty Jane Crumpler of Macon, Ga.; brothers, K. &uot;Sonny&uot; Carpenter of Providence, R.I., and Lawrence B. Carpenter Jr. of Suffolk; stepbrother, Johnny Frank Nixon of Elizabeth City; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Liberty Baptist Church by the Rev. David Blevins and the Rev. Cameron Currin. Burial was in Eureka Baptist Church Cemetery in Corapeake. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.

Naomi M. Brimage

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Naomi Mae Brimage, 56, a native of Murfreesboro, died August 31, 2005, at Maryview Medical Center.

Survivors include her daughter, Wanda T. Williams; and one son, Alvin Session; two sisters, Mary Brimage and Ruth Brimage; and four grandchildren.

Lydia H. Holley

GATESVILLE n Lydia H. Holley, died September 1, 2005 at her home.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. James K. Brown. Burial was in the church cemetery. Stallings Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.

Survivors include her father, Robert Alonza Harrell; two daughters, Mrs. Venessa Whichard-Harris of Hampton, Va., and Dr. Zenobia W. Smallwood of Gatesville; one son, William B. Whichard of Gatesville; three brothers, Gerald F. Harrell of Norfolk, E. Alphonza Harrell of Chesapeake and William Haywood Harrell of Eure; and four grandchildren.

Malvester Futrell

AHOSKIE n Malvester "Ham" Futrell, 79, a native of Northampton County, died September 2, 2005 at Heritage Retirement Home, Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jerusalem Baptist Church by the Rev. John T. Grant. Burial will be in Lankford Cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Futrell was retired from Perdue.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie Harrell Futrell of Ahoskie; one daughter, Connie R. Harrell of Raleigh; four sons, Ronald Futrell of Ahoskie, Calvin Futrell of Greenville, Barry Futrell of New York and Sylvester Futrell of Florida; two stepsons, Joseph Harrell of Ahoskie and Reginald Harrell of New York; one sister, Madessa Earley of Maryland; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
