NEA edges HCHS

AHOSKIE – It was a grueling match.
In the end, the decision came down to the number three doubles where Northeast Academy grabbed a 5-4 win over Hertford County in tennis here last Wednesday.
In the third seeded doubles contest, Brittany Wade and Chelsea Davis defeated Cecilia Jones and Becca Barket 10-1 to secure the victory for the Lady Eagles.
Following the singles competition, Northeast led 4-2, but Hertford County won the top two doubles matches to deadlock the score at 4-all.
In the top seeded doubles, Ally Rushing and Sarah Brown edged Laura Boone and Betty Edwards 11-10. Second seeded Lauren Baker and Lyndsay Burns also topped Samantha Cook and Allyson Cashwell by a count of 10-7.
In singles’ competition, HCHS top-seed Rushing defeated Boone in three sets, rallying from a 3-6 loss to win 6-3 and 7-3.
Cook used straight sets to stop Brown, winning 7-5 and 6-4 before Davis knocked off Baker 6-1 and 6-1.
Burns rallied for Hertford County and won the battle of fourth seeds, winning 6-1 and 6-4 over Cashwell.
Edwards continued her dominance during the early season, stopping Barket by identical scores of 6-0.
Northeast Academy top seed Lyndal Brown did not play do to a back injury.
The Eagles’ match against Greenfield School last week was cancelled. They will now travel to Northeastern today (Tuesday) for a 4 p.m. match.
