Bears beat Ridgecroft

AHOSKIE – After a 5-4 loss Wednesday to Northeast Academy, the Hertford County High School women’s tennis team was looking to bounce back Thursday at home against Ridgecroft.

Lyndsay Burns and Sarah Brown provided the needed edge when they defeated Kristen Cayton and Sarah Magette 8-4 in number one doubles play, giving the Lady Bears a 5-4 win and an overall record of 2-3.

In singles action, Brown defeated Magette two sets to none (6-4, 7-5) and Burns beat Jessica Bolton in two sets (6-4, 6-1).

Also winning for the Lady Bears was Becca Barket (6-3, 6-0) over Tayler Smith. Sister Kaylee Barket overcame a first set loss (1-6) to defeat Taylor Futrell, winning the second set 6-0 and the third set tie-breaker 7-5.

Ally Rushing was defeated by Ridgecroft’s Cayton in the gruelling match, 6-7, 6-0, 5-7. Crystal Styron of Ridgecroft defeated Cecilia Jones 6-4, 6-4.

After Burns and Brown decided the outcome of the match with their doubles win, the Ridgecroft duo of Bolton and Styron defeated Becca Barket and Jones 10-6. Kaylee Barket and Brittany Odom lost to Ridgecroft’s Smith and Futrell 8-3.

Next week the Lady Bears get back into conference action with away matches at Pasquotank (Tuesday) and Bertie (Thursday), hoping to improve on their 1-2 league record.
