Katherine E. Buckhannon

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Katherine E. &uot;Kitty&uot; Buckhannon, 73, a native of Southampton County, died July 29, 2005, at a local hospital. She was a homemaker, as well as being previously employed by Opportunities for the Blind at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Starbrand Inc. of Portsmouth.

Survivors include her husband, Roger &uot;Buck&uot; Buckhannon; a daughter, Barbara Ann Horne of Sunbury; two sons, Bruce Moegenberg of Suffolk and Frederick Moegenberg of Alabama; and a brother, Richard Green of Florida.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Alan Barajikian. Burial was in Olive Branch Cemetery.

Lizzie M. Bottoms

ENFIELD – Lizzie Mae Bottoms, 98, a native of Northampton County, died August 1, 2005 at Britthaven Nursing Home, Enfield.

Homegoing services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday at Allen Chapel AME Church, Jackson, by the Rev. Harold Sidbury. Interment will be in the Powell family Cemetery, Conway. Faison's Funeral Home, Seaboard, is in charge. A viewing will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Dewey Byrum

COLERAIN — Dewey Griffin Byrum, 85, a native of Bertie County, died August 3, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor. He was the widower of Chathleen Dunlow Byrum.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest cemetery, Colerain, by the Rev. J.N. Baggett. Memorial gifts may be given to the Colerain Rescue Squad. The family will receive friends at their home. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

Byrum was a retired farmer.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Woods; a son, Jerry Byrum, both of Colerain; a sister, Dorothy Asbell of Windsor; and one grandchild.

Annie Mason

HAMPTON, Va. — Annie Jones "Sis" Mason, a native of Windsor, died July 27, 2005 at Sentara CarePlex Hospital. She was the widow of Clarence B. Mason.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at St. Luke Mis-sionary Baptist Church. Inter-ment was in the Jones family cemetery, Windsor. Condolen-ces may be sent to www.cookebros.com. Cooke Funeral Home was in charge. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, supplied information.

Mrs. Mason was employed with NASA foreight years.

Survivors include her children, Kevin Mason of Hampton, and Clarence Mason of Catania, Sicily; ten brothers, Curtis of Merry Hill, Willie of Newport News, George, Wallace, Sharion, Steve and Ronald,

Newport News and Kelvin of Hampton; two sisters, Myrtle and Mary, both of Hampton; and six grandchildren.

Susie White

ASKEWVILLE n Susie Mandy Edwards White, 87, a native of Martin County, died August 1, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of John Hazel White.

A funeral will be conducted Thursday at Walker Funeral Chapel in Windsor. Memorial gifts may be given to the Askewville Fire Department.

Mrs. White was office manager for Charlotte Liberty Mutual Life Ins. Co.

Survivors include a daughter, Reva White Cobb of Askewville; a son, Starkey Edward White of Rock Hill, SC; a sister, Patricia V. Wood of Chocowinity; a brother, Whitfield E. Mallory of Savannah, Ga.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Grover C. Faison

KELFORD n Grover Cleveland Faison, 91, a native of Bertie County, died July 31, 2005 at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Center, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Beautiful Zion Baptist Church, Lewiston. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include a sister, Blanche Thompson of Lewiston; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Earnestine Stephenson

MURFREESBORO n Earnestine Stephenson, 82, a native of Hertford, died August 1, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Haven Baptist Church by the Rev. Lloyd Gatling. Burial will be in Carver Park Cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Margie G. Stephenson; four daughters, Mardesta Pope of New York, NY, Maurice S. Blythe and Celestine Worthington, both of Leesburg, Va., Daphine Charity of Richmond; three sons, Ernestine S. Stephenson, Herman L. Stephenson and Vernon L. Stephenson, all of Murfreesboro; one brother, Carlton Stephenson of Murfreesboro; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

LaDaniel Gatling

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – LaDaniel "Dan" Gatling, a native of Rich Square, died July 31, 2005, at Maryview Medical Center.

Gatling was employed by the Portsmouth Public School System for 31 years as an educator and administrator. He retired as principal in 1999. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army after 12 years of service.

Survivors include a son, LaDaniel Gatling II; four brothers, Leondas Gatling, Alvin E. Gatling, Joseph C. Gatling and Bernard S. Gatling, all of Portsmouth; and a grandson.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday in Ebenezer Baptist Church, 728 Effingham St., Portsmouth, by the Rev. Dr. Leroy Hill. Interment will be Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. MANASSAS, Va. n Rosa Lee Porter Hicks, 63, a native of Hertford County, died August 1, 2005 at Prince Williams Hospital.
