Melvin D. Vaughan

WOODLAND – Melvin Dwayne Vaughan, 38, a native of Hertford County, died July 20, 2005 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Nebo Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Lassiter family cemetery, Murfreesboro. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Vaughan was a member of 2nd Baptist Creeksville Church.

Survivors include his mother and father, Mollie and Thomas Vaughan of Woodland; brothers, Michael Vaughan of Alexandria, Va., Anthony Vaughan of Rocky Mount, Percell Lassiter of Raleigh, Robert Lassiter of Apex, George Vaughan of Columbus, Ohio and Roger Vaughan of Murfreesboro.

Sylvia W. Perry

WINDSOR – Sylvia White Perry, 67, a native of Bertie County, died July 20, 2005 in Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Askewville Baptist Church by the Rev. Freddie Harris. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. Memorial gifts may be made to University Hospice of Greenville. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Mrs. Perry was a homemaker and a member of Askewville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Helen Curry of Greenville; sons, Michael Perry of Monroe and Glenn Perry of Grimesland; sisters, Bernice Whitley and Joan Miller; brothers, Wilton and George H. White, all of Windsor; and six grandchildren.

Mary C. Regas

GREENVILLE – Mary Cowper Regas, 66, a native of Gates County, died July 19, 2005, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Mrs. Regas had retired from MEMC, an electronics firm in St. Charles, Mo., as an import/export clerk.

Survivors include her son, Phillip Regas of Cedar Park, Texas; sister, Frances Elizabeth Cowper of Pittsboro; her brother, Bennett Wells Cowper of Avon; and two grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Friday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. Burial followed in the Gatesville Cemetery.

McTroy Saunders

GATES – McTroy Saunders, 77, a native of Gates, died July 17, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stoney Branch Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Holloman. Burial will be in the Saunders family cemetery. Stallings Funeral Home, Inc., is in charge.

Survivors include four sisters, Cellie Saunders and Queen S. Laws, both of Hampton, Va., Jessie S. Lewis of Gates and Malinda S. Norfleet of Hertford; and seven brothers, Joseph Saunders of Salisbury, Md., Willie Saunders of Autryville, Clinton Cross of San Antonio, Texas, Charlie Saunders Jr. and Tommy Saunders, both of Hampton, Wendell Saunders of New Castle, Dela., and Leslie Saunders of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Billy Hughes Jr.

AHOSKIE – Billy &uot;Pike Man&uot; Hughes Jr., died July 19, 2005 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Jerryl Moody. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include two sons, Alfred Hughes of Baltimore, Md., and Kevin Hughes of Rochester, N.Y.; two daughters, Minister Sheila White of Ahoskie and Cynthia Lister of Elizabeth City; his mother, Eller Mae Hughes of Ahoskie; one brother, Lashoon Hughes of Burlington; two sisters, Evelyn Taylor and Patricia Vinson, both of Ahoskie; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Za’Kaiya A. Jacobs

MURFREESBORO – Za’Kaiya Alexandria Jacobs, 2-years-old, daughter of Gloria Jean Jacobs, died July 20, 2005 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Za’Kaiya was a native of Hertford County.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial will be in the Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery.

Ernestine Watson

MURFREESBORO – Ernestine Watson, 76, died July 21, 2005 at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

Dorothy R. Vaughan

MURFREESBORO – Dorothy R. Vaughan, a native of Hertford County, died July 16, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mill Neck Baptist Church by the Rev. Melvin Wilson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of Mill Neck Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Maxwell Vaughan of Thornbury Bristol, England; a daughter, Marilyn Vaughan of Murfreesboro; two sisters, Cora Steward of Murfreesboro and Gladys Fox of Baltimore, Md., and one grandchild.

ROCKY MOUNT – Vera M. Hilliard, 98, died July 21, 2005 at Nash General Hospital.
