GATESVILLE — Gates County District Court Judge J.C. Cole denied bail to two defendants who allegedly transported the largest amount of drugs, 30 pounds of marijuana, into Gates County last week.
Suspects, 37-year old Leighton Daniel Anderson of Stone Mountain, Ga., and 40-year old Winston Douglas Anderson of Lewiston, N.C., are charged with trafficking an illegal substance, possession with intent to sell and deliver, felony possession of marijuana and maintaining a vehicle on felony possession.
Sheriff Edward Webb said the men were captured as a result of a traffic stop that took place around 12:30 a.m. The pair will remain in custody at the Chowan County Jail under a $200,000 bond until they face Judge Cole again on Aug.8.
According to Gates County Sheriff Edward Webb, the confiscated marijuana has a street value of $136,200. Also seized in the arrest were about $1,000 in cash and $4,500 in traveler's checks.
Sheriff Webb has requested assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI in the investigation, and the sheriff's office will share in the forfeited assets once the trial is over.
