Frank W. Israel

AHOSKIE – Frank Waddell Israel, 83, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mr. Israel was born in Edgecombe County and grew up in Winton and Ahoskie and was a member of the Ahoskie United Methodist Church.

After serving in World War II in the US Army and being a disabled veteran, he settled in Virginia Beach where he owned and operated Princess Anne Florist.

He also was a volunteer at Virginia Beach General Hospital emergency room for over twenty years.

He later returned to Ahoskie and taught arts and crafts in his studio in Ahoskie.

He was known throughout eastern North Carolina and Tidewater Virginia as an avid orchid grower and was very proud of the fact that he was the founder of the Tidewater Orchid Society and was its first president.

He attended many orchid congresses and shows throughout the east coast where he won many awards.

Frank is survived by a stepdaughter, Judy A. Barfield of Austell, GA, three step-granddaughters, three step great-granddaughters, and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Waddel and Henrietta Israel and his loving wife, Eloise &uot;Squee&uot; Taylor Israel.

A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. John Dutton, officiating.

Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery.

A farewell reception will be held at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge of services.

Ollie Green

RICH SQUARE n Ollie Ella Martin Green, 86, a native of Northampton County, died July 15, 2005 at Autumn Care Nursing Home, Rich Square.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch Baptist Church, Jackson, by the Rev. Basil D. Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Green was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons, George Green of Rich Square, Johnnie Green of Bronx, N.Y., Garfield Green Jr. of Lewiston and Randolph Green of Lewiston; daughters, Nancy Casterlow of Rich Square, Fannie Gee of Conway and Ollie Mae Green of Ahoskie; 43 grandchildren; 77 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Marie Stancil

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Marie &uot;Beezy&uot; Stancil, 82, a native of Severn, died July 13, 2005, at Maryview Medical Center. She was the widow of Advert Stancil.

Mrs. Stancil fellowshipped at Celestial Baptist Church, Portsmouth.

Survivors include her daughter, Sheila Stancil of Portsmouth; two sons, Larry Stancil and Bobby Stancil, all of Portsmouth; three sisters, Pecolia Phelps and Barbara Johnson, both of Portsmouth and Hannah Travis of California; one brother, Roosevelt Benns of Delaware; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday at Serenity/Steele-Bullock Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Leon Boone. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at the residence for the procession to the chapel.

Bernice W. Chappell

SUNBURY – Bernice Winslow Chappell, 87, a native of Perquimans County, died July 15, 2005, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital in Suffolk. She was the widow of Howard W. Chappell.

Mrs. Chappell was a homemaker and a member of Piney Woods Friends Meeting.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald E. and Charles E. Chappell of Suffolk and Billy Chappell of Roper; three daughters, Mary Lucille Jones of Roper, Elizabeth Brinkley of Sunbury and Kaye Harrell of Gates; two sisters, Ruth Layden of Belvidere and Clara Hendren of Tyner; three brothers, Ernest Melvin and Kenneth Winslow of Elizabeth City, and Clinton Ray Winslow of Hertford; 15 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in Piney Woods Friends Meeting with the Revs. Billy Presley and Tim Leggett. Burial was in Up River Friends Cemetery. Donations may be sent to the Gates County Rescue Squad, 16 US Hwy 158 E., Gates, NC 27937 or Piney Woods Friends Meeting, Belvidere. Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services was in charge.

Catherine W. Hunter

SUFFOLK, Va. – Catherine Wilson Hunter, a native of Gates County, died July 15, 2005, at Sentara Leigh Hospital.

Mrs. Hunter was a homemaker and a beautician for more than 40 years. She was a member of Stoney Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Percy Hunter; her daughter, Vonetta Jackson; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Stoney Branch Baptist Church, 581 Gatlington Road, Gates. Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home, 1717 South St., Franklin, Va., is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the Stoney Branch Baptist Church, P.O. Box 191, Gates, NC 27937.

Kathryn W. Riddick

SUNBURY – Kathryn Wenrich Riddick, 92, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., died July 15, 2005, in her home. Mrs. Riddick was a homemaker and a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church. She was the widow of Sidney Riddick.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley R. Berryman and Mary Kathryn Baum, both of Hobbsville; two sons, Sidney Richard Riddick of Sunbury and Van Riddick of Hobbsville; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Sunday in Riddick family cemetery by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.

E.R. "Bud" Powell Sr.

WOODLAND n Mr. E.R. "Bud" Powell Sr., age 81 of Woodland, NC, died Sunday, July 17, 2005 at Durham Regional Medical Center in Durham, NC.

Mr. Powell was born Feb. 2, 1924, the son of the late J.R. Powell and Allevia Rawls Powell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Annie Spivey Powell, his brothers and sisters, Robert Arthur Powell, Vida Bradley, Julia Howard, Myrt Powell, Walter Russell Powell and Cecil Powell. He was retired owner/manager of East Coast Sales in Murfreesboro, NC and a member of the Woodland United Methodist Church and a WWII Army Veteran.

Survivors include his son, Eric R. "Randy" Powell, Jr. of Durham, NC; a granddaughter, Jill Haynie of Washington, DC; a sister, Sybil Powell Wood of Roanoke Rapids, NC; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Woodland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Sid Collins. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Woodland, NC.

Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC is handling arrangements and where the family received friends, Monday from 7 until 8:30 p.m.

Dora Mitchell Peele

Mrs. Dora Mitchell Peele passed away last Tuesday on July 12, 2005.

Mrs. Peele was retired from the Bertie County High School System after 28 years. Mrs. Peele was an Alumna of Winston-Salem State University, class of 1935. She completed her Master of Arts at New York University in 1955.

Mrs. Peele was predeceased by her husband, Coris Peele and five siblings: Vernon Mitchell, Thelma Ferguson, Virginia Hart, Isabel Riddick and Eleanor Hall.

She was a member of New Ahoskie Baptist Church and served on the New Ahoskie Missionary Circle, Honors, Christian Women of the 20th Century, 2000 Women Day New Ahoskie, Atlantic County Fair and Board of Directors.

Her survivors are, nephew, Claude J. Riddick (Yvonne) and nieces, Fredi L. Holloway (Lewis) and Pamela Payne (Harold); great nephews and nieces, Wayne R. Dallas, Rhonda L. Dallas, Montenier Riddick, Robin Mills and Howard Riddick; and great-great nephews, Marc Payne, Terrence R. Smalls and Joshua C. Riddick.
