Clinton D. Lang

HAMPTON, Va. n Clinton David Lang, 86, died June 30, 2005, in his home.

Lang was born in Hertford County and was a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church.

He was a retired painter with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Chavis Lang; sons, Clinton Nathaniel Lang of Hampton, VA, and Gerald Dwayne Lang of Evanston, IL; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie.

Burial will be in Pleasant Plains Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will assemble at the funeral home at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, prior to services.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.

Walter T. Perry

Cofield – Walter Thomas &uot;Tommy&uot; Perry, 59, died July 2, 2005, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Perry was born in Hertford County, and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

He was an Air Force veteran and industrial truck driver for International Paper Company.

Survivors include his wife, Judith W. Perry; a daughter, Allison Hope Perry of Raleigh; and a son, Walter Thomas Perry, II of Cofield.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. David Ross. Burial will be in Harrellsville Cemetery.

Linda K. Manley

CONWAY – Linda Kim Manley, died July 1, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 9 a.m. Tuesday in St. Charles Catholic Church, Ahoskie, by father McRee. A viewing will be held at St. Charles Catholic Church from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Early Manley of Conway; two sons, Tom Sonnenberg of Conway and Jimmy Sonnenberg of Ahoskie; one stepson, Earl Manley Jr. of Woodland; two daughters, Thuy Lee of Cincinnati, Ohio and Wendy Sonnenberg of Austin, Texas; and 12 grandchildren.

Lucille Thomas

AHOSKIE n Lucille Thomas, 79, died July 1, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Williams. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a retired farmer and a member of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Henry Thomas and Willie Thomas, both of Ahoskie; one daughter, Mary Whitley of Ahoskie; and 13 grandchildren.

Miriam S. Skipworth

FRANKLIN, Va. n Miriam Shelley Skipworth, 67, died Sunday, July 3, 2005 after an extended illness. A native of Fair Bluff, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Margaret Greene Shelley and a member of Hinson's Crossroads Baptist Church in Fair Bluff.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, William Holland Skipworth, her daughter, Kristi Edwards and husband, Christopher of Murfreesboro; one granddaughter, Rachel E. Cuthbertson; two stepgrandsons, Christopher Quinton Edwards and Ernest Andrew Edwards; one sister, Edith Ann Arnette of Lumberton, N.C.; and one brother, Charles Shelley of Fair Bluff. Mrs. Skipworth was predeceased by a sister, Alice S. Brown.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia, with the Rev. Dr. A. Richard Childress officiating. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, has charge of arrangements.

Shirley P. "Cutt" Brown

COLERAIN n Shirley Poe "Cutt" Brown, 76, of the 700 block of NC Highway 42, died Sunday, July 3, 2005, in his home.

Mr. Brown was born in Bertie County, a son of the late, Thomas C. and Nannie Virginia Miller Brown, and was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.

He was a retired farmer and served eight years with the North Carolina National Guard.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of Centura Bank in Colerain, Martin Community College in Williamston; a member of the

Trap Fire Department and served for 20 years as the Compliance Supervisor for Bertie and Hertford County Agriculture, Stabilization and Conservation Service.

"Cutt" is survived by his wife, Nita Parker Brown;

daughters, Virginia Brown Greene and husband, William of Ahoskie, Shirley Brown Clark and husband, Jason of Woodland; a son, Charles Thomas Brown and wife, Teresa of Virginia Beach, VA; brothers, Ollie Miller Brown of Ahoskie, Stanley Wilson Brown of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Tonia Miller, Lauren Goodwin, Nathanael Brown, Gabriel May, Eve Greene, Logan Clark and Emma Kate Clark and great grandchildren, Dylan and Deanna Miller, and Caroline Goodwin.

He was predeceased by sisters, Agnes McLemore, Annie Mae White, Louise Fortune and Sarah Penny and brothers, Louis Ray Brown and Bennie C. Brown.

A memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Burke Holland and Rev. Robert May, officiating.

There will be a graveside service for family at Highland Memorial Gardens prior to service. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Garrett Funeral Home and at Mars Hill Baptist Church Fellowship Hall immediately following services at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Mars Hill Baptist Church, 1325 Meadow Road, Colerain, NC, 27924.

He will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his honesty, integrity, good judgement, love of family and good sense of humor.

Annie K. Cross

SUFFOLK, Va. – Annie Virginia Knight Cross, 68, a native of Gates County, died July 2, 2005 at Obici Hospital, Suffolk. She was the widow of Frank Linwood Cross.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in New Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church, Drum Hill, by Pastor Richard Curry. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery, Suffolk. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, is in charge.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Chamblee of Sunbury and Minister Deloyce White of Elizabeth City; goddaughter, Vanity Bulter of Gates; two sons, Frank Cross of Suffolk and James Cross of Gates; one sister, Rosa Batts of Gates; two brothers, Charlie Knight of Gates and James Knight of Virginia; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Joseph W. Dowdy

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Joseph Wayne Dowdy, 48, of Middleburg, Fla., passed from among us June 28, 2005.

Dowdy retired from the Naval Air Depot, Jacksonville, Fla., with 27 years of service. He was a former member of the Middleburg Masonic Lodge No. 107 and the Jacksonville Scottish Rite.

Survivors include two daughters, Melanie D. Wright of Suffolk and Crystal L. Dowdy of Gates; and three grandsons.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by the Rev. T.M. Frye. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society. Charles B. Carr Jr.

SUFFOLK, Va. – Charles B. Carr Jr., 79, a native of Windsor, Va., died July 2, 2005. He was the widower of Dolly Watson Carr.

Carr

was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the European Theatre. A graduate of the General Motors Institute in Flint, Mich., he was the past owner of Suffolk Motor Co. and retired after 55 years in the auto sales industry.

Survivors include his children, Dolly Chin of Baltimore, Md., William Carr of Gates, Charles Carr III of Windsor, Va.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell and Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. Macon B. Walton. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. Friends may join the family at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. and at the home of his son, Charles, 210 Robinson Way, Windsor, at other times. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Sadie H. Ralph

CORAPEAKE – Sadie Bernice Hawk Ralph, 81, died June 29, 2005 at Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial was in New Middle Swamp Baptist Church, Corapeake. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, was in charge.

Elsie M. Norville

ROCKY MOUNT n Elsie Mae Norville, 77, died June 29, 2005 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at United Friendship Church of Christ Disciples of Christ in Rocky Mount by Elder Herman L. Vaughan. Interment will be in Gardens of Gethsemane. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.
