William H. Daniel
HALIFAX n William H. Daniel, 62, died June 22, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by the Rev. James Barham. Interment was in Allen Grove Cemetery, Halifax.
John H. Davis
CONWAY n John Horace Davis, 90, a native of Northampton County, died June 27, 2005 at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, by the Rev. David Foster. Burial was in the Davis family cemetery.
Davis was the retired owner of Davis Tire Company in Asheboro where he had operated for over 35 years. He was a member of Galatia Baptist Church.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
J.C. Matthews
GATES – John Carroll &uot;J.C.&uot; Matthews, 69, a native of Gates County, died June 27, 2005, in his home. He was the widower of Bertie Lee Wilson Matthews.
Matthews was retired from Georgia Pacific in Murfreesboro as the maintenance supervisor, he remained active and had established his own business of manufacturing steps for Brown's Mobile Home Sales. He was a member of Middle Swamp Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Carroll Mizelle of Ahoskie, Donnie Mizelle of Gatesville and Robert Matthews of Colerain; a brother, Billy Matthews of Gates; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday in Middle Swamp Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.
Simon Bazemore Sr.
WINDSOR n Simon Peter Bazemore Sr., 89, a native of Bertie County, died June 27, 2005 at his residence.
A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. John E. Taylor. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Bazemore was a member of Zion Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. He was a retired self-employed logger.
Survivors include his children, Simon P. Bazemore Jr. of New York, Levi Bazemore of Raleigh, Paul Bazemore of Windsor, Shirley Taylor of Windsor, Faye Anderson of Windsor, Miriam Bazemore of Suffolk, Va., Floretta Holley of Merry Hill and Vera Cofield of Williamston; sisters, Elizabeth Bond of New York, Dorothy Watson of Philadelphia, Pa., and Bertha Angel of Windsor; brothers, William Bazemore and Timothy Bazemore, both of Windsor and Phillip Bazemore of Monroe; 30 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Alexander Fox
JACKSONVILLE n Alexander Fox, 75, died June 28, 2005 at Onslow Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville.

Murray E. Phelps
WINDSOR n Murray Elmo Phelps, 78, a native of Aulander, died June 28, 2005 at his home. He was the widower of Sarah Cowand Phelps.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dennis J. Conner and the Rev. Jack Byrd. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to University Hospice Care, PO Box 74, Ahoskie, NC 27910.
Phelps was a former building inspector for both Bertie and Hertford counties and an Army veteran of World War II. He was also a member of Cashie Baptist Church and Charity Lodge #5.
Survivors include three daughters, Hazel Davis and Ann Phelps, both of Williamston and Ellen Davenport of Windsor; a son, Robert Phelps of Williamston; a sister, Thersa P. Lewis of Windsor; a brother, Roger I. Phelps of Windsor; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Diana M. Ashburn
HENRICO – Diana M. Ashburn, 60, a native of Ahoskie, died June 27, 2005.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Ashburn; a daughter, Doreen M. Hallers of Chesapeake; a son, Robert &uot;Robbie&uot; Ashburn Jr. of Gum Spring; a brother, Danny Murphy of Chesapeake; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mills Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road. A graveside service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in Signal Hill Memorial Park with a procession leaving the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4240 Park Place court, P.O. Box 6359, Glen Allen, VA 23058-6359.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Mary Handsome, 73, died June 29, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.
