Clara W. Jones

WINDSOR n Clara Ward Jones, 79, a native of Hertford County, died June 15, 2005 at Three Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center.

A funeral was conducted Monday, June 20, 2005 at Jordan Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include a daughter, Alice Evangeline McConnico and husband Willie of Ashland, MA; one sister, Ambretta Pugh of New York; and three brothers, George Ward and Clinton Ward, both of Winton and Sherman Ward of Seattle, WA.; three grandchildren, Mala Askerneese and husband, Everett of Brockton, MA, Lynita Harris of Framingham, MA, and Eugene Harris, Jr. and wife, Kim of Brockton, MA; six great-grandchildren, Shana, Alex, Willie and wife, Briana, Lawrence, Joshua and Jordan Evangeline and six great-great-grandchildren, Sahara, Joel, Sabrina, Treyvon, Aryana and Timothy.

Jeanette Vandiford

PENDLETON n Jeanette Byrum Vandiford, 64, a native of Bertie County, and formerly of Murfreesboro, died June 18, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home by the Rev. Wint Hale. Burial will follow the service. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, was in charge. Condolences may be sent to the family at masseyfuneralhom@netscape.net.

Mrs. Vandiford was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, James "Mike" Vandiford; two sons, Michael Ray Vandiford of Powellsville and Brian Allen Vandiford of Pendleton; her father, George Byrum of Murfreesboro; three sisters, Shirley Grizzard of Ahoskie, Peggy White of Murfreesboro and Lennie Williams of Aulander; and three grandchildren.

Corean Bailey

ROCKY MOUNT n Corean Bailey, 92, died June 17, 2005 at Hunter Hill Village.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

James E. Waters

POWELLSVILLE — James Edmund Waters, 77, died at Guardian Care of Ahoskie on June 16, 2005, following an extended illness.

Mr. Waters was born on April 4, 1928 in Bertie County and was involved in the construction business for the majority of his life and retired from Perdue Farms as a garage manager.

He served in the U. S. Army with the 82nd Airborne and was an active and lifelong member of Powellsville Baptist Church.

He was also a member of American George Masonic Lodge #17 AF & AM in Murfreesboro and the Powellsville Scrub Club.

Mr. Waters is survived by his wife, Shirley Blowe Waters of the home; a daughter, Donna W. Farless and husband, Roland of Edenton; three sons, Merrill Waters and wife, Cecille, Gerald Waters and wife, Rhetta, both of Powellsville, Clark Waters and wife, Nancy of Orlando, FL; step-daughters, Denise Thompson and husband, Dave of St. John, Jennifer Peede and friend, Tom Ware of Greenville; a sister, Cora Leigh W. Newbern of Colerain; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Addie Waters; his first wife, Celia White Waters; and sisters, Helen Rae Waters and Merelynn W. Baker.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, June 20, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Garrett Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, with burial following in Stoney Creek Cemetery.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Cancer Society or to Powellsville Baptist Church.

Margaret Jenkins

AULANDER n Margaret Beverly Edwards Jenkins, 84 of the 1100 block of Highway 561 West, died Friday, June 16, 2005 in Carver Living Center, Durham, NC.

Mrs. Jenkins was born in Hertford County, a daughter of the late George Beverly and Doris Horton Beverly Rogers. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Margaret is survived by a daughter, Peggy Edwards of Durham; a son, Ben Edwards of Wilson and one granddaughter. She was predeceased by her first and second husband, Harvey S. Edwards and Raymond J. Jenkins, and a son, Steve Edwards.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday, June 19, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Woody Copeland, officiating. Burial was in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family received friends at the funeral home from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to services.

Dannieel M. Gomez

SOUTHERN SHORES – Dannieel Marie Gomez, 23, of the 200 block of Wax Myrtle Trail, died June 17, 2005, in her home.

Dannieel was born in Canandaigua, N.Y. A waitress at Cosmo's Pizzeria, she was also a student at the Dare County Campus of the College of the Albemarle and was a member of Gatesville United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her parents, Susan Gomez and Michael Britt of Southern Shores; her daughter, Makayla Nicole Gomez of the home; Makayla's father, Brandon Eure of Gates, N.C.; paternal grandparents, Grady and Ginger Britt of Franklin, Va.; aunt and uncle, Teresa and David Walker and their children, David, Pamela and Breanna of Suffolk; aunt, Sherry Wilson and her son Caleb of Franklin; aunt and uncle, Katherine and John Britt and their children, Jack, Teddy and Billy of Franklin; uncles, Jacob Britt of Chester, Va., and Landon Britt of Franklin; and special friends, GiGi Sanders of Kitty Hawk, Cosimo and Josephine Caggese and their children, Vincenzo and Santino of Kill Devil Hills.

A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, by the Rev. Jay Helms. Burial will follow in the Gatesville Cemetery. Friends may join the family Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Archie Bond Sr.

KELFORD n Archie Bond Sr., died June 14, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at St. Luke Pentecostal Holiness Church, Lewiston. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

He was a member of St. Luke Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include a son, Archie C. Bond Jr.; one sister, Hattie Mosley of Lewiston; and four grandchildren.

ROCKY MOUNT n Clara Lynch, 90, died June 19, 2005 at Hospice of Nash General, Rocky Mount.

Marlene V. Thomas

MURFREESBORO n Marlene Vaughan Thomas, 75, a native of Hertford County, died June 18, 2005 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Haven Baptist Church by the Rev. Lloyd Gatling. Burial will be in Carver's Park Cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Crenell Thomas of Murfreesboro; daughter, Ruby Eason of Mapleton; and sister, Lorraine Majette of Murfreesboro.

Ruth R. Holley

MURFREESBORO n Ruth R. Holley, died June 17, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, Woodland, by Ronald Chavis. Burial will be in Carver Park Cemetery, Murfreesboro. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Holley was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness.

Survivors include three sons, Louis C. Holley and William Holley Jr., both of Baltimore, Md., and Robert Holley of Cockeysville; three daughters, Catherine Holley of Murfreesboro, Ethelene Reid of New York, N.Y., and Ava Lewis of Mount Joy, PA; three brothers, Robert Stephenson, Henry C. Stephenson and Welneith Moore; three sisters, Mary Lawrence of Murfreesboro, Audrey Cowan of Como and Naomi Stephenson of Virginia; 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Joseph C. Evans

HARRELLSVILLE n Joseph Calvin "J.C." Evans, of Harrellsville and Morehead City, died Sunday, June 19, 2005.

Mr. Evans served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and he attended UNC at Chapel Hill. He was a life long farmer and businessman, a 32 Degree Mason, a Shriner, and a former chairman of the Hertford County Social Service Board.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Munden Funeral Home Chapel in Morehead City.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Miller Evans; three daughters, Pam Evans of Chesapeake, VA, Victoria Evans Elliott of Florence, SC and Holly Jay Evans of Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Joyce Evans Wallace of Richmond, VA and Grace Evans Ricks of Rocky Mount, NC. He is also survived by a grandson, Evans Radcliff Elliott of Florence, SC.
