WINDSOR – The direction Bertie County Public Schools will take over the next few years will be decided here Wednesday.

A 2 p.m. meeting of the Bertie County Board of Education has been called for tomorrow where that elected body is expected to vote on who will become the county’s next school superintendent.

The Bertie Education Board has been in discussion over the past few months in regards to the new superintendent. That person, who will take over for retiring Bertie Superintendent John F. Smith Sr., is expected to assume their new role on July 1.

Smith, who has served since 1999, announced his retirement last year.

Wednesday’s decision will mark the second time in a month that a Roanoke-Chowan area public school system has changed leadership.

On May 31, Dr. Kathi H. Gibson was selected by the Northampton County Board of Education to grab the superintendent’s reigns. Gibson, the former superintendent of the Weldon City Schools System, replaces the retiring Dr. James Pickens.
