WASHINGTON – Beaufort County scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth here Wednesday night as they edged Ahoskie Post 102 4-3 in a Senior American Legion baseball game.

Ahoskie tied the score in the top of the eighth inning when Brandon Matthews singled and came around to score on an Austin Lawrence RBI-triple. That scored deadlocked the game at three-all heading into the bottom of the eighth.

After Beaufort took the 4-3 lead, Ahoskie threatened in the top of the ninth, but came up short.

With two out, Jacob Harrell walked and went to second on a wild pitch, but was left stranded in scoring position.

Ahoskie opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Lance Thomas had an infield single, stole second and scored on a Duty Todd RBI-single. They added a run in the top of the second when Matthews walked and scored on a Judd Whitehead RBI-double. Whitehead was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit to a triple, but left Ahoskie with a 2-0 lead.

Beaufort tied the score in the bottom of the second when they plated two runs and then took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Ronald Phelps started for Post 102, going four innings and allowing two runs and two hits. Corey Castelloe pitched three and one-third innings, allowing two runs and two hits for the loss. Thomas hurled the final two-thirds inning, giving up one hit.

Ahoskie had seven hits with Thomas leading the way with two.
