Robert L. Kearney

ROCKY MOUNT n Robert L. Kearney, died May 7, 2005 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Ada Cox

SPRINGFIELD n Ada Lillian Blanchard Cox, 83, a native of Woodland, died May 9, 2005 at her home.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Demaine Springfield-Annandale Funeral Chapel, Backlick & Edsall Rds., Springfield, Va. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Springfield, 7300 Gary St., Springfield Va. Interment Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, June 8 at 1 p.m. Friends are asked to assemble at Demaine Funeral Home at 12 noon to form the procession to Arlington.

Mrs. Cox graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in elementary education. She worked as a teacher. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Springfield, where she served in many capacities including President of the Women's Missionary Union.

Survivors include her husband, LTC Charles T. Cox of Springfield; two daughters, Laura J. Moats of Midland and Lillian V. Williams of Champaign, IL; one sister, Majorie Underwood of Woodland; one brother, Edward C. Blanchard of Fort Myer, FL; and five grandchildren.

Johnny H. Wilson

SUNBURY – Johnny Haywood Wilson, 67, a native of Gates County, died May 9, 2005, in his home. Wilson was a retired meat department manager of both A&P supermarkets in Virginia and Ahoskie, and Family Foods in Gatesville, he was a member of Cypress Chapel Christian Church in Suffolk. For many years he was a member and deacon of Damascus Christian Church and had formerly served in the National Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Brown Wilson; three daughters, Lisa W. Williams of Gates, Christi W. Williams of Elizabeth City and Jaymi Wilson of Sunbury; a son, Kenneth Ray Wilson of Grifton; a sister, Phyllis W. Robertson of Suffolk; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, by the Rev. John Kimball. Burial will be in Middle Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery.

Eunice M. Scott

PORTSMOUTH, Va. –

Eunice M. Scott, 89, a native of Sunbury, died June 7, 2005, in Beverly Manor of Portsmouth. She was the widow of Gooding Scott.

Mrs. Scott was a member of First Baptist Church, Elm Street, Portsmouth, where she was an honorary senior choir member.

Survivors include a daughter, Irene Scott of Norfolk; a son, Leonard &uot;Buddy&uot; Scott of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church Elm Avenue, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Gregory A. Thomas. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Corprew Funeral Home is in charge. Condolences may be sent to www.corprewfuneralhome.com.

J. Lineberry Grissom

COURTLAND, Va. – Jesse Lineberry Grissom, 84, a native of Hertford County, died May 9, 2005 at Courtland Healthcare Center.

Grissom was a retired farmer and a member of Courtland Baptist Church for 71 years where he served as a trustee and deacon for many years and was a member of the Men’s Bible Class and Men’s Fellowship. He was a charter member of Sebrell Civic Club and a former member of the Board of Directors of Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Ellis Grissom; two daughters, Dale G. Hardin and Janice G. Burgess; a sister, Adeline G Kitchen; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Wednesday at Courtland Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Speight. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery at a later date. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Courtland Baptist Church, P.O. Box 148, Courtland, VA 23837 or a charity of one’s choice. Wright Funeral Home has charge.

Clementine Bowser

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Clementine P. Bowser, 52, died May 9, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A visitation will be conducted from 4 to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the True Way Church of God in Christ Jesus, Weldon by Bishop Moses Williams. Interment will take place immediately following the service in the Oakridge Cemetery.

Hazel B. Galbreath

SPRING HILL, FL. – Hazel Barnak Galbreath, 76, formerly of Grandy, N.C., and Bowers Hill, Va., died May 9, 2005, in Spring Hill, Fla.

She was a native of Winston-Salem.

Five children survive her, including Patricia Hooker of Como, Loretta Mallory of Spring Hill, Fla., Stacey Sheetz of Kill Devil Hills, Christopher Barnak of Suffolk, Va. and Joseph Michael &uot;Mickey&uot; Barnak.

Other survivors include three sisters, Harriett Pearce, Mary Lou Wimmer and Adabell Rooks; one brother, Andrew J. Russell Jr.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Edna P. Whitaker

AULANDER – Edna Parker Whitaker, 84, of Carroll Street, died Monday May 9, 2005, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Whitaker was born in Bertie County and was a lifetime member of Connaritsa Baptist Church and the Woman’s Missionary Union.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Whitaker, two sons, Carl E. Whitaker of Suffolk, Va., Larry W. Whitaker of Raleigh; two sisters, Lucille P. Sylvia of Suffolk, Va. and Evelyn P. Byrd of Aulander; a brother Roy W. Parker of Aulander; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Connaritsa Baptist Church with the Rev. Hines Adams, officiating.

Burial followed in Aulander Cemetery.

Joseph C. Jordan

EDENTON – Joseph Clarence Jordan, 87, of the 400 block of Mexico Road, died May 8, 2005 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Mr. Jordan was born in Chowan County and was the son of the late Josephus C. and Nancy Cartwright Jordan.

He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company and served with the U.S. Marines in World War II during the Guadalcanal Campaign.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy J. Tadlock and Sylvia Jordan of Windsor; two sons, Jerry Jordan of Elizabeth City and Terry Jordan of Edenton; two sisters, Myrtle Ruth of Florida and Zenovah of Goldsboro; a brother, R.W., also of Goldsboro; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Bob Young held a funeral at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home in Edenton. Burial followed in Beaver Hill Cemetery.

Dora Elena Riddick

COLERAIN – Dora Elena Riddick of Colerain, died, Sunday, May 8.

Riddick was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Colerain. She is survived by son Arnold Riddick of Norfolk, VA.; a brother, Bismark Riddick of Colerain; three sisters, Anna Slade, Novella Riddick and Daisy Leary all of Colerain; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14 at Zion Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Nathaniel Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
