Aces trump HCHS

AHOSKIE – The Aces scored four runs in the first inning and went on to beat Hertford County 10-4 here Tuesday night.
The Bears dropped the Northeastern Coastal Conference baseball matchup, despite getting a 2-for-3 performance from Ryan Simmons.
Edenton was able to get the scoring started in the first frame thanks to a two-run single by Steven Brown. The Aces also got a run when they stole home and another on an error.
The Aces added two in the top of the third on a Mike Dowd RBI-double and an Akeem Glenn RBI-single that pushed the lead to 6-0.
Edenton got two more in the top of the fourth when a run scored on an error and another scored on a wild pitch, giving the Aces a commanding 8-0 lead.
Hertford County responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Michael Burton reached on an error before heading to second on a Simmons single to left. William Barmer plated Burton with an RBI-double to left. Simmons, who went to third on Burton’s hit, scored on a Josh Lane infield single and courtesy runner Roger Harrison scored on an error on the play, allowing the Bears to get within 8-3.
Edenton scored again in the top of the fifth frame to lead 9-3.
HCHS came back in the bottom of the fifth and scored when Steven Davis walked and took second when a pitch hit Andy Thompson. Davis scored on a Simmons RBI-single to centerfield, cutting the Aces’ advantage to 9-4.
Edenton scored their final run in the top of the sixth to establish the final score.
Heath Britt pitched five innings to suffer the loss while Ryan Matthews threw the final two innings.
The Bears recorded six hits during the contest.
Hertford County fell to 3-10 on the season and 1-6 inside the Northeastern Coastal Conference. They will travel to Northeastern for a 7 p.m. contest on Friday.
