AHOSKIE – The unthinkable came true.

Lawrence Academy came in riding a Tarheel Independent Conference win streak that would rival any team in the country. So long is the streak that no one is sure how far back it dates.

That ended yesterday (Monday) afternoon in the first round of the TIC tournament when Hobgood Academy pulled off the biggest upset in the tournament’s history, knocking off top-seeded Lawrence 3-2.

The Raiders scored the winning run in the top of the seventh stanza when the game was deadlocked at 2-all. That run scored on a Jeremy Joyner RBI-single that catapulted Hobgood to the win.

Lawrence gained the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Daniel Waters doubled to right-centerfield and came around to score on a Judd Whitehead RBI-single to right.

Whitehead went to second on an outfield error on the same play, stole third and scored on a Holden McClenney RBI-squeeze bunt that put Lawrence ahead 2-0.

Hobgood deadlocked the game with two runs in the fifth inning. Drew Josey had an RBI-triple and scored himself on a wild pitch to even the score at two-all.

Andrew Barber pitched a complete game for Lawrence, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out 10.

Billy Thompson went the distance for Hobgood on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two.

The win sent Hobgood to today’s 4 p.m. Tarheel Independent Conference championship game.

Lawrence finished the season 18-5 as they await a bid to the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association state tournament.
