Knights beat Bears

AHOSKIE – The Knights scored in every inning as Currituck beat Hertford County 11-1 in a Northeastern Coastal Conference baseball game here Friday night.
Currituck opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first frame. Zack Beasley plated the run with an RBI-groundout.
The Knights added to the lead in the second when a Brandon Johnson RBI-single lifted Currituck to a 2-0 advantage.
The Bears threatened in the bottom of the second when, with two outs, Heath Britt singled to center and went to second on a Gary Porter single to left. Britt and Porter advance on a wild pitch, but the runners were left stranded when a strikeout ended the inning.
Currituck scored two runs in the top of the third inning on a David Hartman solo homer and a Graham Cronoghe RBI-single. That gave the Knights a 4-0 advantage.
The visiting team added a run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Beasley.
The Bears scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Joel Britt singled to right and scored on a Heath Britt RBI-double to right field that cut the Currituck lead to 5-1.
The Knights added two runs in the top of the fifth on a Wesly Alcock two-run homer to leftfield which put the visiting team ahead 7-1.
Currituck scored their final four runs in the top of the sixth stanza.
Alex Evans had an RBI-single, Brandon Dozier a two-run homer and Cronoghe an RBI-triple to put the Knights ahead 11-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, H. Britt doubled with two outs, but was thrown out at third to end the game.
Michael Burton pitched five and one-third innings for the loss while H. Britt threw the final two-thirds of an inning.
The Bears had eight hits and are led by H. Britt, who is 3-for-3, and Andy Thompson, who finished 2-for-2. Burton, J. Britt and Porter each had one hit.
Hertford County dropped to 3-9 on the season and 1-5 inside the Northeastern Coastal Conference. They host Edenton today at 7 p.m.
