Stanley Smallwood

WILLIAMSTON n Stanley Smallwood Jr., 22, died February 28, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor. Burial will be in Spring Hill Church Cemetery, Lewiston.

Archie L. White

WINDSOR n Archie Lathan White, 76, a native of Bertie County, died March 3, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Askewville Baptist Church by the Rev. Freddie Harris. The family will receive friends at the home. Memorial gifts may be made to Bertie County Rescue Squad or Askewville Fire Dept. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

White was a farmer and member of Askewville Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn White of Windsor; a brother, Walter White of Windsor; and a sister, Elsie Bazemore of Ahoskie.

Catherine Spencer

AHOSKIE n Catherine Spencer, died March 3, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Monday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church by the Rev. Patrick Young. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include her mother, Mazzie Harrell of Ahoskie; and a sister, Janice Smith, also of Ahoskie.

Joy M. Bunch

WINDSOR n Joy Mizelle Bunch, 49, a native of Bertie County, died March 3, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dennis J. Conner. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be made to Bertie County n Relay for Life.

Mrs. Bunch was a nurse at Martin General Hospital for 12 years. She was a member of Askewville Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, David Bunch of Windsor; her mother, Sarah White Mizelle of Windsor; two daughters, Mitzi Bunch Jordan and Amanda Joy Bunch, both of Williamston; a brother, John "JD" Mizelle of Manteo; and one grandchild.

Clarine Bazemore

COFIELD —

Clarine Ellis Bazemore, 92 of 307 Bazemore Rd. died March 2, 2005 at Sentara Beach General Hospital.

Mrs. Bazemore was born in Hertford County, a daughter of the late, Clarence and Lena Taylor Ellis. She was the widow of William &uot;Bill&uot; Shaw Bazemore. Mrs. Bazemore was a homemaker and a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Koehler-Pfotenhauer, Virgina Beach, Va.; two grandsons, Peter Koehler-Pfotenhauer, Fredicksburg, Va.; Davis Koehler-Poftenhauer, Virginia Beach,; two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2005, at Bethlehelm Baptist Church, with the Rev. Edwin Dacus, officiating. Burial will follow in the Bazemore Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, N.C., from 12:30 until 1:30 p.p. Sunday, prior to services. Memorial donations may be made to Bethlehelm Baptist Church, c/o Miss Helen Bazemore, 234 Bazemore Rd., Cofield, N. C., 27922

Kenneth Lee Kee

HERTFORD – Kenneth Lee Kee, 35, died February 25, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in Joppa Missionary Baptist Church, Hobbsville. Stallings Funeral Home is in charge.

Lloyd Benton

NEWSOMS, Va. – Lloyd &uot;Peterbo&uot; Benton, 70, a native of Southampton, County, died February 28, 2005, in his home.

Benton was retired from Smithfield Food after 12 years of service. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Boykins, where he served as trustee and past president of the usher board.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Benton of Newsoms; two sons, Morris Benton of Newsoms and Michael Benton of Murfreesboro; two sisters, Edith Hines of Fayetteville, and Hattie Jackson of Richmond; two brothers, James Benton of Woodland, and Wallace Benton of Boykins; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church, Boykins, by the Rev. Melvin Scoggins. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at the home for the procession the day of the service at 2:30 p.m. Wyatt & Sons Funeral Home Inc. is in charge.

Sarah C. Phelps

WINDSOR n Sarah Cowand Phelps, 76, a native of Windsor, died March 2, 2005 in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dennis J. Conner and the Rev. Jack Byrd. Memorial gifts may be made to Preschool and Sunday School Dept. at Cashie Baptist Church, 221 S. Queen St., Windsor, NC 27983.

Mrs. Phelps was a child care provider and homemaker. She was a member of Cashie Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School.

Survivors include her husband, Murray Phelps of Windsor; a son, Robert Phelps of Williamston; three daughters, Hazel Davis and Ann Phelps, both of Williamston and Ellen Davenport of Windsor; one brother, Luther Cowand of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Betty Hughes of Windsor, Ruby Harrison of Raleigh and Minnie Ridenour of Greenville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Cleveland Vaughan

MURFREESBORO n Cleveland Vaughan, 74, a native of Northampton County, died March 1, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at 2nd Baptist Creeksville Church, Conway, by the Rev. Anthony Rawling Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth L. Vaughan of the home; five sons, Cleofus Vaughan, James Vaughan and Raymond Vaughan, all of Murfreesboro, Steve Vaughan of Virginia Beach and Vernon Boone of Rich Square; four daughters, Ruth Murphy of New Jersey, Mary Vaughan of Murfreesboro, Erma Williams of Virginia Beach and Laura Hassell of Ahoskie; 26 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Frances Pitt

ROCKY MOUNT n Frances Pitt, 76, died March 3, 2005 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Sarah B. Mitchell

AULANDER n Mrs. Sarah Bazemore Mitchell, age 90, died March 3, 2005.

Mrs. Mitchell was born March 13, 1914, the daughter of the late "Buddy" Vann Bazemore and Cora Bazemore. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Mitchell. She attended Women's College at Greensboro, NC and taught school in Bertie County and Hertford County Schools for many years. She was a lifetime member of the Aulander Volunteer Rescue Squad and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the John Finch Early VFW Post 11226. She was a faithful member of the Aulander Baptist Church where she had served as church historian.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 6, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with the Rev. Robbie Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Aulander Cemetery.

A visitation will be held, Saturday, March 5, 2005 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Aulander Volunteer Rescue Squad, Aulander, NC 27805.

Jacob B. Mitchell

WINDSOR n Jacob "Jake" Brinkley Mitchell, 82, a native of Windsor, died March 3, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Dennis J. Conner and the Rev. Jack Byrd. Memorial gifts may be made to Bertie County Rescue Squad or Windsor Fire Department.

Mitchell owned and operated Jake's Barber Shop for 65 years.

Survivors include his wife, Hilda Everett Mitchell of Windsor; a son, Rick Mitchell of Cary; a brother, Robert Mitchell of Columbia; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Louis N. Bunch Jr.

SUNBURY -Louis Norman &uot;Junior&uot; Bunch Jr., 68, a native of Chowan County, died March 3, 2005, in Louis Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.

Bunch was a self-employed trucker, he was associated with Tennessee Steel based in Cofield, and was a member of Western Branch Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Deanna Parker Bunch; two sons, Ronald Bunch and Brian Bunch, both of Chesapeake; two sisters, Carolyn Hobbs of Suffolk and Janice Jones of Ivor; a brother, Earl Bunch of Dinwiddie, Va.; and four granddaughters.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. Burial with Masonic Rites will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton.

Dorothy T. Knight

CORAPEAKE – Dorothy Taylor Knight, 91, a native of Corapeake, died March 2, 2005, in Tandem Healthcare of Windsor. She was the widow of Leon P. Knight Sr.

Survivors include a son, Leon P. Knight Jr; two sisters, Malene Mathias and Evelyn Powell; five granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Knight was a member of Parker’s United Methodist Church, Corapeake.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Parker's United Methodist Church by the Rev. Grace Murray. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
