HCHS rides defense

AHOSKIE – Eleven was the wild number here Tuesday night.

Three Hertford County High School players scored 11 points each as the Bears rolled to a 71-40 Northeastern Coastal Conference victory over First Flight.

LaMarcus Bond, Leonard Burnell and Ken Lee each hit for 11 points while seven other HCHS performers scored during the league win that sent the Bears to 13-5 overall and 7-4 inside the league wars.

&uot;In the second half, we went to the one-three-one defense,&uot; veteran boys’ hoops coach Charles Simmons said. &uot;We got some turnovers, made some easy baskets and broke the game open. Overall, it was a good conference win.&uot;

The Bears led by nine (32-23) early in the second half when they went on a 13-2 tear to push that advantage to more than 20 points.

Frank Gatling had the first two buckets of the spurt, followed in close order by a couple of free throws by Burnell.

Bond and Lee sandwiched a pair of hoops around a Matt Preston field goal from First Flight before Lamar Monger ended the run with a three-pointer that gave HCHS a 46-25 advantage with less than a minute to play in the third quarter.

Leading by 20 (48-28) beginning he fourth frame, the Bears sealed their win with 10 unanswered points.

Gatling sandwiched a pair of hoops around scores by James Futrell and Burnell to push the Hertford County lead to 58-28.

The contest was played fairly evenly the rest of the way with HCHS hitting for 13 points while First Flight scored 12.

In the early going, both teams struggled offensively.

The Bears led 6-2 after hoops from Bond, Lee and LaMarcus Jenkins, but two Isaac Jacobson buckets at the end of the first quarter helped get the Nighthawks within a single point (11-10).

Hertford County went on an 11-2 tear to open the second period. Lee started the spurt while Bond had six of his 11 points during that run. With four minutes to play in the first half, Hertford County led 22-12.

The Bears maintained almost that advantage at the intermission where they led 30-21.

In addition to the trio scoring 11 points, the Bears got eight from Gatling and six from Monger, Futrell, Leon Eason and Michael Moore.

HCHS will meet league foe Manteo here Friday night.
