William P. Barnes

AHOSKIE – William Perry Barnes, 79, a native of Bertie County, died January 19,

2005 in Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Barnes was a member of First Baptist Church, Ahoskie, a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, a member of the W.O. W. and was a retired warehouse manager for Heilig Myers Furniture Store.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie Joyner Barnes; one daughter, Shirley B.

Harrell of Murfreesboro; one son, Alan Barnes of Plymouth; three

sisters, Elma Evans of Dayton, Ohio, Sara Chaffin of Roseville, CA., and Ella Mae

Allen of Charlotte; one brother, Tommy Barnes of Manteo; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Friday at First Baptist Church Ahoskie by the Rev. Jesse J. Croom. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church Ahoskie, 320 West Main St. Ahoskie, N.C. 27910. Garrett Funeral Home Ahoskie was in charge.

Clyde J. Harrell

AHOSKIE — Clyde J. Harrell, 63, a native of Hertford County, died January 15, 2005 at his residence.

Harrell was a retired account with Capitol Mercury, NY, and a member of Ahoskie Christian Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Bethany Baptist Church, Harrellsville, by Pastor Daniel Smith. Burial will be in New Harrellsville Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include three sisters, Beulah Sessoms and Celestine Hawkins, both of Hampton, Va., and Elaine Harrell Spivey of Ahoskie; two brothers, Winston Harrell of Hampton and Donnell Harrell of San Antonio, Texas; and one goddaughter, Daryl O. Kelly of Zebulon.

Felix D. Gray

COVINGTON, Ga. n Felix Dwight Gray, 36, a native of Hertford County, died January 14, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon at Apostolic Faith Church, Rocky Mount, by the Rev. Eugene Segres Jr. Burial will be in St. Matthews Cemetery, Rocky Mount. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Gray was employed with Motorola, Inc. in Suwannee, Ga.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Chamblee Gray; a daughter, Jordin Gray; four brothers, Robert G. Barnes of Atlanta, Ga., Phillip R. Barnes of Long Island, N.Y., William Gray Jr. and Bobby Hall of Rocky Mount; and five sisters, Gladys Reed of Hollis, Lillian Sharpe of Durham, Dorothy Valentine of Brooklyn, Barbara Dunlap of Lindenhurst and Magdalene Smythe of Laurelton.

Patricia M. Magette

AHOSKIE -Patricia Mabie Magette, 76, a native of Dutchess County, N.Y.,

died January 18, 2005, at Rex Hospital, in Raleigh.

Mrs. Magette had served as Regional Director of The American Red Cross, was a member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Williams Magette, Sr., daughter, Cheryl Magette Campbell, sons, Raymond Williams Magette, Jr. and Kurt Robert Magette, sister, Evelyn Mabie Danilevics; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. January 28 at Garrett Funeral Home. Friends may be received at the home of Bill Magette.

Gregory Newsome

MURFREESBORO n Gregory A. Newsome, a native of Hertford County, died January 19, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Hunter's Funeral Home Chapel, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Daniels.

Newsome was a carpenter.

Survivors include two sons, Taurean D. Newsome and Torre D. Newsome; three brothers, Randy Ophelia and Ferlin Ophelia, both of Murfreesboro and Ryland Ophelia of Hampton, Va.; and four sisters, Alice Scott of Norfolk, Lavonda Ophelia of Newport News, Taquica Bailey of Portsmouth and Tambra Bowden of Virginia Beach.

Aldwin L. Phelps

WINDSOR n Aldwin Louis Phelps, 76, a native of Washington County, died January 19, 2005 at his home.

A funeral was conducted Friday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bob Molden. Burial was in the Davenport family cemetery. Memorial gifts in Mr. Phelps' memory may be made to: University Hospital Hospice, PO Box 74, Ahoskie, N.C. 27910.

Until his retirement, Phelps was the President of Phelps and White Construction. He was a member of Charity Lodge #5 and a member of Aulander Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Davenport Phelps of Windsor; a daughter, Brenda P. Hardison of Plymouth; a son, Tim Phelps of Windsor; a sister, Ava P. Harrington of Spring Hill, Fla.; a brother, Douglas Phelps of Plant City; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Ruby L. Aycock

HOPEWELL n Ruby Lee Aycock, 82, of Hopewell, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 15, 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jamie and Selma Thompson; her brothers, Billy Gill Thompson and Arthur Thompson; her sister, Helen Gray Thompson; and a grandson, Michael Barricks. An infant son also preceded her in death. Mrs. Aycock was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Charlie Murphy Aycock; her children, Arthur Glen (Paulette) Aycock, Charles Lee (Dell) Aycock, Joyce Faye (Buddy) Barricks, Linda Irene (Marcus) Miller and Janice Annette Smith; 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, J.T. Thompson and Freddie Thompson; and two sisters, Sally Lou Gaulin and Shirley Pearce.

Funeral services were conducted January 18, 2005 in Woodlawn Baptist Church, Hopewell. Interment was at Southlawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Woodlawn Baptist Church or to the Hopewell Emergency Crew. Nelsen Funeral Home, Hopewell, was in charge of arrangements.

John E. Cooper

MURFREESBORO n John Edward Cooper, 74, a native of Hertford County, died January 20, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Survivors include his children, Larry D. Cooper and Diane Eason, both of Murfreesboro and Juanita Cooper of Suffolk, Va.; one sister, Annie Marie Bynum of Ocean Port, N.J.; one brother, Paul E. Cooper Jr. of Murfreesboro; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, Como, by the Rev. Dr. James Shear. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Bruce M. Leggett

RICH SQUARE n Miss Bruce Marie Leggett, age 84, of Rich Square, died Thursday, January 20, 2005 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.

Bruce was born May 6, 1920 to the late Willie and Mary Agnes Rawls Leggett. She is preceded in death by her brother, Alphus Leggett, twin sister, Margarite Medford and sister, Lela Hall.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, Mary Agnes Parker and husband, Raymond, Don Leggett and wife Mary, William G. Hall, Connie Mears and husband Mark; six great-nieces and nephews, and eight great-great- nieces and nephews also surviving.

Graveside service will be held Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square.

Massey Funeral Home of Jackson is in charge of arrangements.

Jamari Whitney

AHOSKIE n Jamari Whitney, infant, died January 18, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at Hunter's Funeral Home Chapel by Bishop Anthony Cherry. Burial will be in the Whitney family cemetery.

Survivors include parents, mother, Keisha Young of Ahoskie; father, Darran Whitney of Aulander; two brothers, JaQuez Winborne of Ahoskie and Darran Whitney Jr. of Gates; and two sisters, Jaz'Mane Cofield and JaQuasia Cofield of Ahoskie.

Goldia Oliver

PORTSMOUTH, Va. –

Goldia Oliver, 81, a native of Ahoskie, died January 18, 2005, in Autumn Care of Portsmouth.

She was a member of First Baptist Church Elm Avenue, Portsmouth.

Survivors include three sisters, Ezola Britt of McLean, Va., Saluda Young of Suitland, Md., and Rachel Jones of Brentwood, N.Y.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church Elm Avenue by the Rev. Gregory Thomas. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The body will be placed in the church Saturday at 10 a.m. Family and friends will assemble at Fisher Funeral Home, 1520 Effingham St., Portsmouth, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday for the procession to the church.
