James S. Johnson

AHOSKIE – James S. Johnson, 44, a native of Baltimore, Md., died October 15, 2004 at his residence.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Second Baptist Church by the Rev. Mar Speller. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge.

Johnson was a member of Second Baptist Church Union.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Johnson of Ahoskie; his father, Jessie James Johnson of Baltimore; two sons, Landis Watson of Aberdeen and Rudolph Beverly III of Ahoskie; one daughter, Eunice Watson of Durham; three brothers, Michael Johnson, Samuel Johnson and Jerry Johnson, all of Baltimore; and two sisters, Mary Preston and Ann Johnson, both of Edgewood.

Virginia P. Harrell

GATESVILLE – Virginia Lee Perry Harrell, 89, a native of Chowan County, formerly of Gatesville and more recently of Murfreesboro, died October 14, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. She was the widow of Walter Scott Harrell.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Gatesville Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Asbill and the Rev. Billy Sellers. Burial was in Gatesville Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Gatesville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 167, Gatesville, NC 27938 or Meherrin Baptist Church elevator fund, 519 Meherrin Lane, Murfreesboro, NC 27855. Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services of Hertford was in charge.

Mrs. Harrell was a retired co-owner/operator of the former Harrell’s Grocery in Gatesville and worked for many years with the former Harrell Funeral Home. She was a member of Meherrin Baptist Church in Murfreesboro and formerly a long-time member of Gatesville Baptist Church where she was the organist and member of the Women’s Missionary Union. She was also a member of the Gates County Homemakers Club, the Senior Citizens Club and a past president of the PTA.

Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis H. Bryant of Murfreesboro; a son, W. Perry Harrell of Suffolk, Va.; a sister, Alma P. Byrum of Suffolk; a brother, Irvin Perry of Sunbury; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchildren.

Lloyd Branch Jr.

SEVERN – Lloyd Branch Jr., 79, died October 12, 2004, at Hampton Woods Health & Rehabilitation, Jackson.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at First Baptist Church of Severn by the Rev. Elisha Barnes. Burial was in the church cemetery. Faison Funeral Home, Seaboard, was in charge.

Michael Robinson

PLEASANT HILL – Michael Robinson, 32, died October 9, 2004, at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Emporia, Va., by the Rev. Richard Webb Sr. Burial was in the church cemetery. Faison Funeral Home, Seaboard, was in charge.

Willie W. Charles

MURFREESBORO – Willie W. Charles, 67, a native of Bertie County, died October 16, 2004, at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Sandy Branch Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Lycurgus R. Harrell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Charles was a retired foreman for Textile Co. He was a member of Sandy Branch Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Charles of the home; one son, Anthony Charles of Newark, NJ; two daughters, Marilyn Charles of Wendell and Jennifer Jefferson of Greensboro; one brother, James W. Charles of Paterson; two sisters, Ruby Anderson and Frances Charles, both of Paterson; and five grandchildren.

Roy F. Bacher

JACKSON – Roy F. Bacher, 63, a native of Truing, Texas, died October 14, 2004.

A graveside service was conducted Sunday at Jackson Cemetery by the Rev. R.O. Denton. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, was in charge.

Bacher served in the US Navy during the Cuban crisis and was retired from the Southampton Correctional Center after 18 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Bacher; seven children, Charles A. Bell Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Linda Y. Bell of Chesapeake, Sybil G. Bell of Houston, Texas, Mary T. Holden of Jackson, Shelia A. Gayle of Suffolk and Mona L. Bell of Chesapeake; 20 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Johnson

COMO – Dorothy Gatling Johnson, 52, a native of Hertford County, died October 15, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A chapel service was conducted Monday with Pastor Peggy Beale. Burial was in Carver’s Park Cemetery, Murfreesboro. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, was in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Curtis Johnson of Como; children, Waltika, Shamika, Sheiania, Saquan Shaquille and Shaquan, all of Como; her mother, Hattie Stephenson of Suffolk, Va.; her stepmother, Elizabeth Gatling of Murfreesboro; and brothers and sisters, Guvonia Gatling-Edmonds of South Plainfield, N.J., Patricia Gatling Brooks of Union, N.J., Dianne Urkqhart of Suffolk, Sharon Burgess of Chesapeake, Michael and Wayne Gatling, both of Murfreesboro, Milton Stephenson of Hillsborough and Lorenzo Stephenson of Suffolk.

Rev. Travis E. Newton

PENDLETON -Rev. Travis Edward Newton, 63, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 13, 2004.

Rev. Newton was born in Hobbs, New Mexico to the Rev. Glenn Edwin Newton and the late Esther McCarley Newton. He was an ordained Southern Baptist minister and pastor of Roberts Chapel Baptist Church. Rev. Newton also served in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Wake Forest University and Master of Divinity from Southeastern Theological Seminary.

Funeral services were Monday, 2 p.m. at Pine Forest United Methodist Church, the Rev. Willie McLawhorn, the Rev. John Pond and the Rev. Billy Olsen officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Rev. Newton is survived by his father and his wife of 40 years, Carol Mitchell Newton; his daughter, Ella Christina Guinn and husband, Darrell, of Knoxville, TN; and his son, David Travis Newton and his wife, Kimberly, and grandson, Jason Edwin, all of Wake Forest. He is also survived by his brothers, Charles Newton and wife, Nancy, and Elvin Newton, all of Bakersfield, CA; and his mother-in-law, Ella Mitchell of Rosewood.

The family received friends Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, 1300 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro.

Corrine M. Roberts

OCRACOKE ISLAND – Elizabeth Corinne McWilliams Roberts, 89, died October 15, 2004, in Chesapeake, Va.

A graveside service is planned at the McWilliams Family Cemetery on Ocracoke Island by the Rev. John White. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Ocracoke United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Roberts was the owner of the former Ocracoke Gameroom and presently Corinne’s Apartments on the island.

Survivors include her husband, Roy D. Roberts of Chesapeake; three sons, Charlie T. &uot;Tommy&uot; Smith of Gates, Darrell L. Roberts of Chesapeake and Stewart W. Roberts of Sebring, Fla.; a sister, Fannie Jones of Hertford; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Queen E. Jones

NORFOLK, Va. – Queen E. &uot;Mama Queenie&uot; Jones, 87, a native of Jackson, died October 11, 2004, in DePaul Medical Center.

A funeral was Monday in Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Donald F. Taylor. Burial was in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk chapel was in charge.

Mrs. Jones was a graduate of the Chicago School of Nursing and retired as a nurse. She was a member of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, Chesapeake.

Survivors include her husband, Wiley P. Jones Sr.; one daughter, Evangeline Davis; one son, Wiley P. Jones Jr.; a brother, Roosevelt Arrington, all of Norfolk; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Kenneth D. Orvin

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Kenneth Dean Orvin, 34, a native of Norfolk, died October 13, 2004, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Graveside services were held Monday in the Bunch family cemetery on Selwin Road in Gates County, by the Rev. Gregory Hensley.

Orvin was a painter with Bay Mechanical in Virginia Beach, he was a member of the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his daughter, Kimberli Ann Orvin of Illinois; his parents, Kenneth Lynwood and Sarah Elizabeth Byrum Orvin of Chesapeake; maternal grandmother, Bernice Bunch Byrum of Chesapeake; and his paternal grandmother, Lorraine Askew of Suffolk.

Catherine Clark

KELFORD – Catherine Clark, 74, a native of Bertie County, died October 15, 2004.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by the Rev. Kevin Earl Callarr. Burial will be in the Jenkins family cemetery, Lewiston.

Mrs. Clark was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Clark and Clyde Clark Jr., both of Kelford; six daughters, Betty Clark of the home, Ethel Clark of Kelford, Cynthia Watford of Aulander, Wilma Pittman of Tarboro, June Jones of Apex and Mary Ann Mills of Louisiana; a brother, George Jenkins of Lewiston; and several grandchildren.

Jarquis P. Manley

COFIELD – Jarquis Pierre Manley, 19, a native of Hertford County, died October 16, 2004.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Philippi Baptist Church by the Rev. Elton Hall. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Jarquis was a 2003 graduate of Hertford County High School and a sophomore at North Carolina A&T State University.

Survivors include his parents, Albert and Judith Manley of Cofield; sisters, Dedria Manley of Cofield and Joan Sellers of Greenville; and his paternal grandparents, Marjorie and Albert Manley of Cofield.
