Richard Moncure

RICHMOND, Va. – Richard Cassius Lee Moncure V, of Chester Va. died Monday, October 4, 2004 in Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond.

Moncure was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Chester. He was a retired salesman for Goldburg Co., a wholesale distributor for RCA. He served in the National Guard then transferred to the U.S. Navy serving in WWII. He was a member of Blue Lodge No. 94 and also Scottish Rite and ACCA Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth H. Moncure; daughters Virginia M. Lester of Richmond, Va. and Kathryn M. Chenault of Fredericksburg, Va.; two brothers, Henry B. Moncure of Roanoke Rapids and James Gordon Moncure of Powhatan, Va.; sisters, Louise M. Mason of Owens, Va. and Caroline M. Woodard of Stafford, Va.

A memorial service was held Friday, October 8, 2004 at St.John’s Episcopal Church, 12201 Richmond Street, Chester, Va. Inurnment followed at the Aquia Episcopal Church Cemetery in Stafford, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church Building Fund or the American Cancer Society, 4240 Park Place Court, P.O. Box 3659, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-6359.

Harvey Vann

AHOSKIE – Harvey William &uot;Fox&uot; Vann departed this life on Oct. 5, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Harvey was a resident at Guardian Care Nursing Home in Ahoskie. He was retired from Easco Carolina Aluminum.

Harvey was born to the late Spencer and Janet Pierce Vann on Nov. 5, 1934 in Hertford County.

At an early age, Harvey joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. He later met Norma Jean Parker and they were married on Aug. 29, 1963.

Survivors include two daughters, Jill Vann-Jones (Oscar Sr.) of Aulander and Robin Vann-Walker (William Jr.) of Winton; one son, Harvey &uot;Ricky&uot; Vann of Union and five grandchildren, Davin &uot;DJ&uot; and Damion Walker of Winton, and JaConda Vann, Chastity and Oscar II &uot;Fatty&uot; of Aulander.

Also surviving are two sisters, Cheryl V. Manley and Iris V. Hines, both of Winton; and one brother, Cozy Vann, also of Winton. Three special nieces – Canika and Auntra Vann of Winton and Carnissa Vann of Union – and two special nephews, Aunte and A’Quan Vann of Union, are also listed among the survivors, as are a host of other nieces, nephews and relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10 at Jordan Grove Baptist Church, Winton with the Rev. James Shearn officiating. Burial will follow in the Vann Family Cemetery, Union.

Alice Hughes

BROOKLYN, NY – Alice Victoria Lewis Taylor Hughes, 91, died Friday, October 1 and a celebration of life service was held on October 4 at John McManus & Sons Funeral Home, 4601 Avenue N in Brooklyn with Rev. Douglas Lewis officiating.

Hughes was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and received her early education at Waters Training School in Winton.

Survivors include two sisters, Nancy Esther Wilson of Brooklyn and Ella Mary Mathewson of Ahoskie.

Nathaniel Blackstone Jr.

SALISBURY – Nathaniel Blackstone Jr., 30, of Salisbury died Wednesday, October 6. Blackstone, a native of the Bronx in New York was a schoolteacher at Henderson Independence High School and coached basketball, football and track at Knox Middle School and was a member of Phi Beta Sigma and Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Marie Blackstone of Roanoke Rapids; a brother, Derrick E. Blackstone of Baltimore, MD; three sisters, Pamela Blackstone of Decatur, GA, Sonya F. Drake of Chicago, IL and Lakisha Blackstone of Baltimore, MD; grandmother, Mariah Parker of Colerain; three aunts, four uncles, three nieces, four nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Roanoke Chapel Baptist Church, Sunday, October 10 at 3 p.m. with Rev. Franklin Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Diane Elizabeth Outlaw

AHOSKIE – Diane Elizabeth Outlaw, 52, of Ahoskie, died Wednesday, October 6 at her residence. Outlaw is a native of Princess Anne County

Virginia Beach, Va. She was a homemaker and member of Wynn’s Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Wanda Saulsbury of Ahoskie; two sons, Alfred Saulsbury of Smithfield, Va. and Aaron Calloway of Ahoskie; one sister, Vanessa Watkins of Ahoskie and three brothers, Bernard Simmons, Walter Simmons and Larry Simmons, all of Norfolk, Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 12 at 11 a.m. at Greater Wynn’s Grove Baptist Church with Bishop Thomas Lee officiating.

Burial will follow at Jones Memorial Park in Virginia Beach, Va.

John Riddick

WINDSOR – John Riddick, 76, of Windsor, died Sunday, October 3 at Three Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center in Windsor.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 9 at 1 p.m. at Emmanuel Gospel Baptist Church on Jamestown Rd. in Windsor with a burial to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Gilliam Funeral Home in Windsor will be handling the arrangements.

Joe Anne Gatling

GATES – Joe Anne Hoggard Gatling, 56, of Gates, died Thursday, October 7 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. A native of Bertie County, she was employed with Freeman Metal and was a member of Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her fianc\u00E9, Walter Wolfrey; one son, David Louis Taylor Jr. of Lewiston; two daughters, Elaine Taylor and Chowaine &uot;Gail&uot; Taylor both of Ahoskie; three brothers, Herbert &uot;Hawk&uot; Hoggard of Ahoskie, Jimmie Hoggard and Clarence Hoggard both of Middletown, CT; two sisters, Mollie Bazemore and Isabelle Riddick both of Ahoskie; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be held Tuesday, October 12 at 1 p.m. at New Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church with a burial to follow at Hoggard Family Cemetery.

Hunter’s Funeral Home in Ahoskie will be handling the arrangements.

Robert Artis

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Robert &uot;Jack&uot; Artis of Newport News, Va., died Tuesday, October 5.

A native of Hertford County, he is survived by one son, Robert Williams of Ahoskie; two daughters, Michelle Jenkins of Tacoma, WA and Tiffany Hill of Hampton, Va.; two brothers, James Artis of Hampton, Va. and Lee Stanley Artis of Newport News; two sisters, Betty Jean Hall of Aulander and Julia Lovelace of Newport News and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 9 at 1 p.m. at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Ahoskie with Rev. Melvin Moore officiating.

Burial will follow at Reid-Lassiter Cemetery in Hertford County.

Marjorie Outlaw Manning

WINDSOR – Marjorie Outlaw Manning, of Windsor, died Thursday, October 7 at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be held at Cedar Landing Baptist Church in Windsor, where she was a member, on Saturday, October 9 with Rev. Shelton Barnes officiating.

Burial will follow at the Outlaw Family Cemetery in Windsor.
