Redille Lewis
AHOSKIE – Redille Lewis, died August 18, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. She was the widow of Bennie Lewis.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church by the Rev. Roy Sharpe. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home Inc. was in charge.
Mrs. Lewis was a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, Ahoskie and Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Brooklyn, N.Y., where she was an Eastern Star and Deaconess.
Survivors include one son, David Lewis of Brooklyn; six daughters, Margaret Rue of Brooklyn, Emma Battle of Piscataway, N.J., Mildred Simone Lurito of Ahoskie, Lorraine Lewis of Pittsburgh, Pa., Patricia Dean of Broadway, N.C. and Vivian Palmer of Fairfield, Calif.; one sister, Purdis Brewington of Ahoskie; 19 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Rachel Johnson
POTECASI – Rachel Stevenson Johnson, died August 19, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
A funeral was conducted Sunday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Melvin Moore. Burial was in the family cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, was in charge.
Survivors include her husband, Andrew Johnson of Potecasi; one daughter, Linda Stevenson of Newport News, Va.; one brother, Ernest Stephenson of Ahoskie; three sisters, Josephine Ward, Fannie M. Weaver and Elnora Vann, all of Ahoskie; and one grandchild.
Sallie Bazemore
LEWISTON – Sallie Bazemore, died August 22, 2004 at the Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Janice M. Bennett
WELDON – Janice Marie Bennett, 44, died August 19, 2004, at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.
A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday with the family receiving friends from 7-8 p.m. in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, by the Rev. Albert Clark. Interment will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Weldon.
James White Sr.
WINDSOR – James Edward White Sr., 74, a native of Bertie County, died August 21, 2004 in his home.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lawrence Baptist Church by the Rev. Wint Hale and the Rev. J.N. Baggett. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.
White was retired from NCDMV as a license examiner and was a member of Lawrence Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby C. White; two daughters, Dawn W. Bass of Kure Beach and Denise W. Johnson of Windsor; two sons, James &uot;Jim&uot; White Jr. of Windsor and Thomas C. White of Aydlett; a brother, Robert White of Aulander; a sister, Joyce Price of Williamston; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mary Veach
SCOTLAND NECK – Mary Evelyn Jennings Veach, 94, died August 20, 2004. She was the widow of E.K. Veach Sr.
A funeral was conducted Sunday at Scotland Neck United Methodist Church. Interment was in Sunnyside Cemetery, Scotland Neck. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Scotland Neck United Methodist Church, 110 West 9th Street, Scotland Neck, NC 27874. Letchworth Funeral Home was in charge.
Mrs. Veach was a member of Scotland Neck United Methodist Church and a church organist for 40 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara V. Piland of Winton; a son, E. Kermit Veach Jr. of Scotland Neck; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Annie Rankins
AHOSKIE – Annie B. Rankins, 81, a native of Bertie County, died August 19, 2004, at Brian Center Nursing Home.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Nathaniel Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Mrs. Rankins was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Luther Rankins Jr. and Barry L. Rankins, both of Windsor and Milton Rankins of Akron, Ohio; five daughters, Jackie Curvan of Marrietta, Ga., Dorothy Gorham and Carolyn Humphry, both of Boston, Mass., and Shirley Davis and Mary D. Rankins, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; three brothers, John Bazemore of Ahoskie, Walter Bazemore of Trap and Maurice Bazemore of Boston; four sisters, Etta Rankins of Ahoskie, Mildred Mitchell of Hexlena, Clara Gibson of Elizabeth City and Alice Rankins; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Vernell Askew
WINTON – Vernell Askew, 74, a native of Emporia, Va., died August 23, 2004, at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Scotland Neck.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Philippi Baptist Church, Cofield. Burial will be in Vaughan Cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Askew was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Askew; three brothers, Waverly Askew and Isaac Askew, both of Portsmouth, Va., and John Askew Jr. of Harrellsville; and three sisters, Eula Mae Jones of Winton, Marie Riddick of Tunis and Elois Whitaker of Baltimore, Md.
