Harvey R. Harris

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Rev. Harvey R. Harris, formerly of Warrenton, died July 26, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Philadelphia.

A visitation will be held from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Tuesday with services beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, Warrenton. Interment will be in the Harris family cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

Elton R. Stallings

DURHAM – Elton Randolph Stallings, 42, died July 30, 2004.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Walton’s Grove AME Zion Church, Hobbsville. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, is in charge.

Elizabeth R. Twine

HOBBSVILLE – Elizabeth Rountree Twine, 82, a native of Gates County, died August 1, 2004, in her home.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Carter family cemetery by the Rev. Gene Asbill. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Mrs. Twine was a homemaker and a member of Warwick Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Lucille Twine Boyer of Portsmouth, Va.; three sons, Walter D. &uot;Buck&uot; Tatem of Hobbsville, Graham L. Twine Jr. of Hobbsville and Elmer T. &uot;Chris&uot; Johnston Jr. of Chesapeake; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Raymond S. Vann

RICHMOND, Va. – Raymond S. Vann, 70, a native of Northampton County, died July 30, 2004.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Vann; five children; sisters, Flora Mae Sebeck and Angeline Howell; brothers, William, Archie and Roy &uot;Bubba&uot; Vann; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Webber Baptist Church. Interment was in Dale Memorial Park. Morrissett Funeral Home, Richmond, Va., was in charge.

Richard E. Railey

COURTLAND, Va. – Richard Edward Railey, 82, a native of Northampton County, died July 31, 2004, at his residence in Nags Head.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Wright Funeral Home in Franklin. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Courtland United Methodist Church, St. Andrews, Nags Head, or a charity of one’s choice.

Railey received his undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Subsequent to his graduation from UNC, he served his country as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. Although he claimed all of his life to be a pacifist, he said of World War II, &uot;to win the peace we had to win the war.&uot; He served his country with honor as a true member of the &uot;greatest generation.&uot; After the war, he earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. At both UNC and the University of Virginia, he was a student activist. At Virginia he was co-founder of the Virginia Student Legal Forum. He began his career as a lawyer in 1948 and actively engaged in the practice of law until his death. Later, he was instrumental in the formation of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and served as president of that organization from 1972 to 1973. In 1975, he and his son, Richard E. Railey Jr., formed the partnership of Railey and Railey, and he and his son practiced continuously until his death.

He pursued numerous civic activities including service to Hillcrest Nursing Home in Suffolk, the Red Cross, Boy Scouts, the Ruritan Club, the Methodist Children’s Home and he was a faithful and devoted Methodist. He attended Courtland United Methodist Church, where he was a member and leader. He also attended St. Andrews By The Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head, where he was active in the recent fund drive for the hand-bell choir.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Bradshaw Railey; two daughters, Joan Bradshaw Railey of Nags Head and Pamela Railey Merritt of Bluefield, W.Va.; two sons, John Bradshaw Railey of High Point, and Richard E. Railey Jr. of Courtland; and six grandchildren.

Christine E. Capehart

MERRY HILL – Christine Elizabeth Burke Capehart, a native of Chowan County, died July 29, 2004 at her home.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Peterson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Best. Burial was in Ashland Baptist Church Cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Capehart was a member of Ashland Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, James Edward Capehart; children, James Grant Capehart of Suffolk, Va., Thomas Eddison Capehart, William Gurley Capehart, Gladys Anderson, Carolyn Bazemore, all of Windsor; three brothers, Ulysess Leary of Colerain, Clifton Johnson of Baltimore, Md., and Joseph Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Cora Johnson of Baltimore; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Johnnie R. Winston

MERRY HILL – Johnnie R. &uot;Dick&uot; Winston, a native of Bertie County, died July 23, 2004, at Three Rivers Nursing Home, Windsor.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Peterson Chapel Baptist Church by Minister Jarvis Parker. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.

Winston was a member of Peterson Chapel Baptist Church, Merry Hill.

Survivors include his wife, Armeta Winston; children, Mattie Cofield of Merry Hill, Betty of Baltimore, Md., Johnnie Jr. of Jersey City, N.J., Brenda of South Carolina, Francine Wiggins of Owings Mills, MD., Teresa Craig of Richmond, Va., Mack of Lewiston, Jimmy of Merry Hill, Michael of Edenton, David of Colerain and Timmy of Hertford; 22 grandchildren; six sisters, and seven great-grandchildren.
