Edward Umphlett Sr.
SUFFOLK, Va. – Edward Douglas &uot;Doug&uot; Umphlett Sr., 79, a native of Gates, died May 23, 2004, in Obici Hospital.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell and Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. Mark Burns. Interment was in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk.
Umphlett retired after 40 years of service with Planters as an electric eye operator and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a Baptist and a member of Buckhorn Hunt Club.
Survivors include his wife, Emily McClenny Umphlett; a son, E. Douglas &uot;Dougie&uot; Umphlett Jr.; a sister, Elizabeth Carolyn Smith; and a brother, Clarence Umphlett of Windsor, Va.
John H. Bland
ROCKY MOUNT – John Henry Bland, 56, a native of Lewiston, died May 22, 2004 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Bowling Funeral Home, Rocky Mount. A graveside services was also conducted Wednesday at Hoggard Cemetery in Lewiston-Woodville. Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, was in charge.
Bland was employed with Howell Fabrication, Rocky Mount.
Survivors include his wife, Marisa Bland; a son, Sherwood Bland of Burlington; a daughter, Debbie Plumb of Burlington; seven stepchildren, Eddie Kim of Oregon, Marilyn Kim and Roseann Kim, both of Hawaii, Steve Bonardo, Michael Bonardo and Karen Richardson, all of Rocky Mount and Sandra Morris of Apex; a brother, James Bland of Lewiston-Woodville; two grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pecolia W. Gray
RICH SQUARE -Pecolia Wilkins Gray, 88, a native of Northampton County, died May 24, 2004,at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chapel Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Rex Edwards. Burial will be in the Moore Cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Survivors include two daughters, Belinda Cary of Rich Square and Gussie Hinton of Lewiston; 45 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
Louis Bishop
ROXOBEL -Louis Bishop, 51, a native of Bertie County, died May 25, 2004, at his residence.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Bishop of the home; one daughter, Leveda Barnes of Wilson; six brothers, Curtis of Lewiston, Bobby of Rich Square, Thomas Jr., Wilbur, Ricky and Randy, all of Roxobel; six sisters, Juanita Norfleet, Judy Bush and Gloria Roberson, all of Roxobel, Jenny Bazemore of Wilson, Betty Bishop of Woodland and Detha Manning of Williamston; and two grandchildren.
Margaret Futrell
MURFREESBORO – Margaret Baggett Futrell, 56, a native of Bertie County, died May 22, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
A funeral was conducted Tuesday at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, by the Rev. Robert Baggett. Burial was in Ahoskie Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Carroll Futrell Jr.; daughters, Candy Hall, Kim Christina Futrell and Crystal Dawn Warren, all of Murfreesboro; sons, Billy Y. Futrell of Fort Knox, Kentucky and John T. Futrell of Kunsan Air Base, Korea; sister, Shirley Baggett Deans of Ahoskie; three brothers, Curtis Earl Baggett of McCormick, S.C., Talmadge Eugene Brown Sr. of Roanoke Rapids and Stanley Ray Baggett of Murfreesboro; and nine grandchildren.
Luella Williams
WINDSOR – Luella Williams, 87, died May 24, 2004.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge.

ROCKY MOUNT – Jesse Thomas Whitaker, 51, died May 22, 2004, at Duke Hospital, Durham.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Morning Star Church, Rocky Mount, by Elder R.T. McCarter. Interment will be in Cedarview Cemetery, Enfield. A visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Rocky Mount Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home.
Jessie M. Bonner
MURFREESBORO – Jessie M. Bonner, a native of Chowan County, died May 24, 2004, at her home.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Woodland, by Brother Melvin Jones. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Bonner; a daughter, Carol Bonner of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Carol Richardson of Murfreesboro; and two grandchildren.
Gilbert Hendricks Sr.
AULANDER – Gilbert Hendricks Sr., 72, a native of South Boston, Va., died May 25, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Rose Garden Cemetery, South Boston.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Parker of the home; three sons, Gilbert Hendricks Jr. and Kelvin Wynn, both of Bronx, N.Y., and Derrick Smith of Philadelphia, Pa.; seven daughters, Darlene Barksdale of California, Vanessa Tyler and Karen Wynn, both of Manhattan, Leslie Wynn of Bronx, Sherita Foreman of Richmond, Jackie and Stephanie, both of Phildelphia; and a host of grandchildren.
