WINDSOR – Bailey Daniels pitched a one-hitter and led Manteo to a 12-0 Northeastern Coastal Conference victory over Bertie here Tuesday night.
The Redskins opened the scoring with five runs in the top of the first. The first run scored on an error before Daniels had a two-run single. Ryan Brown and Scott Harvey each had an RBI-single to give Manteo a 5-0 lead after one inning.
The Redskins added three runs in the top of the third, the first of which scored on a wild pitch.
Alfie Wheeler had an RBI-single to score the second run and Nate Bernard plated the third run on his sacrifice fly. The result was a Manteo lead of 8-0 after three innings of play.
The Redskins scored their final four in the top of the fourth frame.
Brad Vuyovich
had an RBI-single as did Carey Foster. Another run scored on a wild pitch and Bernard had a bases-load walk.
Bertie’s lone hit came in the bottom of the fourth when Lance Thomas tripled to right-center. The run is kept from scoring, however, when Corey Castelloe grounds to the pitcher and Thomas is caught in a run-down.
Castelloe reached second on the play, but a fly out ended the Falcon threat.
&uot;We came out nervous and it showed in the first inning,&uot; BHS baseball boss Randy Whitaker said. &uot;We didn’t hit the ball and we made some mistakes that you can’t make against Manteo.&uot;
The loss drops the Falcons to 3-7 overall and 1-2 inside the league.
They will travel to Pasquotank County tomorrow (Friday) for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Panthers.
