Evelyn V. Hill
GATES – Evelyn Virginia Hill, 78, died March 8, 2004.
Private memorial services will be held. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.
Linda H. Work
EURE – Linda Lee Hill Work, 46, a native of Peoria, Ill., died March 8, 2004 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Private memorial services will be held. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.
Mrs. Work was Lutheran by faith and was a night shift manager with Family Foods of Gatesville.
Survivors include her husband, Jackie L. Work Sr.; a daughter, Loren Work of Norfolk, Va.; a son, Jackie L. Work Jr. of Eure; a stepdaughter, Mandy Bracken of Pennsylvania, Pa.; her parents, Kenneth and Joyce Pointer Hill; two sisters, Terry Clark of Norfolk and Laura Cross of Illinois; two brothers, Loren Hill of Illinois and Steve Hill of South Carolina; and a grandson.
Sarah Downing
COFIELD – Sarah Downing, 85, a native of Hertford, died March 7, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at New Harrellsville Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry D. Walston Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
She was a member of New Harrellsville Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Lillie Mae Raynor of Cofield, Annie Fae Taylor of Cofield and Elsie Marie Downing of Harrellsville; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Collin Parker
MURFREESBORO – Collin Parker, 88, a native of Hertford, died March 7, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Parkers Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. James Hampton. Burial will be in the Gatling Church Cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Parker was a member of Parkers Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Melvin Parker, Ricky Parker and Charlie Parker, all of Murfreesboro and Wardell Parker of Bronx, N.Y.; and six daughters, Peggy Simmons, Costella Parks and Annie Parker, all of Murfreesboro, Avis Joyner of Conway, Marion and Martha Parker, both of Bronx.
Mamie Bradley
MILWAUKEE – Mamie Bradley, 95, a native of Northampton County, died March 5, 2004, at Hampton Woods Nursing Home.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Jerusalem Baptist Church by the Rev. J.T. Grant. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Aaron Bradley and James Peoples, both of Conway; one daughter, Ella James of Coatsville, Pa.; and one sister, Hannah Stewart of Conway.
James E. Twine
BELVIDERE – James Edward &uot;Pig&uot; Twine, 77, a native of Perquimans County, died March 7, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
A graveside service was conducted Wednesday in the Riddick-Twine Family Cemetery on Perry’s Bridge Road by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. and the Rev. William Clements. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.
Twine was a retired farmer and a member of Zion United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Muriel Whitehurst Twine; a daughter, Jill T. Marples of South Mills; sons, Mark E. Twine and Jimmy W. Twine, both of Belvidere; a brother, Durwood S. Twine of Edenton; and six grandchildren.
Patty Manley
PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Patty Manley, 86, a native of Seaboard, died March 7, 2004, in her home.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday in Fourth Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Revs. Charles W. Beamon and Jake Manley. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is in charge.
She was a retired cook from Hodges Seafood and a former member of Fourth Baptist Church, where she was an usher.
Survivors include a host of nieces and nephews.
Ernest T. Odom Sr.
SUFFOLK, Va. – Ernest Thomas Odom Sr., 61, died March 9, 2004, in a local hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell and Hill Funeral Home. Burial will be in Casper family cemetery, Eure. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Odom was employed as a rigger with Newport News Shipyard. He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 141.
Survivors include his wife, Florence A. Odom; a daughter, Linda Whittemore and a son, Ernest T. &uot;Tommy&uot; Odom Jr., all of Suffolk; three sisters, Christine Cabral of Kill Devil Hills, Barbara Wright of Chesapeake and Joyce Fulgham of Suffolk; and two grandsons.
Pearl N. Boone
AHOSKIE – Pearl Nickens Boone, 95, a native of Hertford County, died March 1, 2004, at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Pleasant Plains Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Young Leftwich of Philadelphia, Pa.; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
Willie Williams
LEWISTON – Willie &uot;Will&uot; Williams, 69, a native of Bertie County, died March 6, 2004, in Raleigh.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Weeping Mary Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnnie Cofield. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Williams was a logger and a member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred; six sons, Willie of Roper, Johnnie, Jarvis, Phillip and Jessie, all of Windsor and James of Woodland; four daughters, Barbara Jacobs and Lisa Bess, both of Lewiston, Sandra Bond of New York and Leslie Dudley of Knightdale; two sisters, Virginia Williams of Windsor and Bernice Williams of New York; one brother, Clyde Williams of Lewiston; 25 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Dana C. Chavis
AHOSKIE – Dana Copeland Chavis, 70, a native of New York City, died March 9, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Sessoms. Burial will be in the church cemetery. For those who desire to do so, donations in memory of Dana C. Chavis may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association and/or the American Kidney Foundation. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
Survivors include her children, Walter R. Chavis Jr., Johnny R. Chavis, Kenneth D. Chavis, Michael Chavis, Lorraine C. Mitchell, Marilyn C. Powell and Carolyn C. Bond, all of Ahoskie and Deborah S. Chavis of Raleigh; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Malinda Joyner
RICH SQUARE – Malinda Joyner, died March 9, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Zion Grove Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Elbert Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Survivors include one son, Elonza C. Joyner Sr. of Elizabeth City; two daughters, Selestine Joyner Vaughan of Murfreesboro and Barbara J. Omankwah of Knightdale; one brother, Mayfield Langford of Queens, N.Y.; three sisters, Elizabeth Slade of Conway, Eula M. Deloatch of Seaboard and Ruth Buffaloe of Potecasi; nine grandchildren; and 10 grandchildren.
