AHOSKIE – In a match played mostly at midfield, the Hertford County High School girl’s soccer team came up short against Lawrence Academy here Monday afternoon, 2-1.

Neither team got deep into rival territory often as both teams limited scoring opportunities from inside the box.

That didn’t stop either team from taking their shots on goal however.

The first goal of the match came off a Taylor Davis penalty kick in the first half.

The Lawrence Academy striker made good on the opportunity as her kick, low and to the left corner, was simply too far out of reach for the Lady Bears goalie.

Neither team got a good look at goal for the remainder of the half and went into halftime looking to make some adjustments.

It didn’t take very long in the second half for Hertford County to find net as senior Britney Futrell’s kick found the left corner from 20 yards out to tie the score at one all.

The four-year starter likes her role on this year’s squad.

&uot;We have a lot of new people on out team,&uot; said Futrell.

&uot;However, everyone is working together and the response has been very positive.&uot;

The tie did not last long as Warrior senior Cheech Mantione netted her second goal of the year four minutes later off the pass from teammate

Abigail Harden.

&uot;Abigail passed me the ball and I heard my teammates yell to shoot it, so I did,&uot; said Mantione.

&uot;I aimed for the upper right corner and luckily their goalie didn’t get to it.&uot;

Mantione’s goal proved to be the match winner as Lawrence Academy improved to 2-1 overall and Hertford County fell to 0-2.

Lawrence Academy hosts John A. Holmes Thursday evening at 7 pm and Hertford County goes to Ridgecroft next Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match.
