James Copeland

BRONX, NY – James Leroy Copeland, 68, a native of Bertie County, died February 21, 2004.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial will be in the Eaton family cemetery, Lewiston. The family will receive friends at the home of Nettie Bazemore, 233 Piney Wood Road, Lewiston.

Copeland was retired from Amtrack Railroad and from Trucking Company in New York. He was a member of Luella Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Della White Copeland of Atlantic City, N.J.; one daughter, Debra Spicer of Plainfield; and his stepfather, Vanderbuilt Ruffin of Hampton, Va.

Lossie P. Dickens

WHITAKER – Elder Lossie P. Dickens, 83, died February 20, 2004, at South Village Nursing Home, Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, Whitaker, by Bishop S.P. Poole. Interment will be in the Branch Memorial Cemetery, Enfield. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

David W. Daniel

WINDSOR – David W. Daniel, 77, a native of Northampton County, died February 24, 2004 at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. R.O. Denton Jr. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be given to Bertie County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 74, Windsor, N.C. 27983.

Daniel worked for Eastern Fuels as a truck driver and was a member of Askewville Assembly of God.

Survivors include his wife, Vadis Hoggard Daniel; a daughter, Sue Hoggard of Windsor; a son, Don Daniel of Windsor; a brother, Linwood Daniel of Salem, Va.; a sister, Virginia Williams of Ahoskie; and three grandchildren.

Paul L. Powell Sr.

MURFREESBORO – Paul Leslie Powell Sr., 92, a native of Bertie County, died February 22, 2004. He was the widower of Lelia Dare Colson Powell.

A graveside service was conducted Wednesday at Buckhorn Baptist Church Cemetery, Como. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, was in charge.

Powell was retired from Union Camp.

Survivors include his daughter, Rosalea Boyette of Newport News, Va. and Ann Jones of Greenville; a stepson, Vincent Salerno of Suffolk; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Guy C. Picot

FRANKLIN, Va. – Guy Carr Picot, 93, a native of Como, died February 23, 2004, at his daughter’s home.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. A. Richard Childress and the Rev. Dr. Ira D. Hudgins. Burial will be in Buckhorn Cemetery, Como. The family suggests that memorials be made to Franklin Baptist Church, 208 N. High St., Franklin, VA 23851.

Picot was a retired district manager for Citizens Home Insurance Co. He was a member, former deacon and former chairman of the Board of Ushers of Franklin Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Newsome Picot; a daughter, Margaret &uot;Becky&uot; Picot Otey of Richmond; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

Woodrow Freeman

MURFREESBORO – Woodrow Freeman, 84, a native of Hertford County, died February 24, 2004.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hunter’s Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Burial will be in Carver Park Cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, is in charge.

Freeman was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include one daughter, Hazel Freeman of Richmond, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Jacqueline Riddick

GATES – Jacqueline L. Riddick, 38, a native of Suffolk, Va., died February 23, 2004.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Stoney Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Holloman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Riddick was a newspaper carrier for the Virginian Pilot and a member of Stoney Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Quinton Riddick; two sons, Jartell and Quentin Riddick of the home; and her mother, Mary Morris of Gates.

Hattie Hardy

AHOSKIE – Hattie Hardy, died February 23, 2004 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Jerryl Moody. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include one sister, Jessie Mae Cofield of Ahoskie; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

William R. Brown

AHOSKIE – William Randolph &uot;Bill&uot; Brown, died February 21, 2004, at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Union, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Melvin Lyttle Jr. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include two daughters, Kendra Andrew and Kyesha Brown; two sisters, Evelyn and Carolyn; three brothers, Bobby, Wayne and James &uot;Mike&uot; Brown; and two grandchildren.
