MURFREESBORO – After five consecutive USA South Rookie of the Week awards, Chowan freshman Trayvon Lathan was named to the d3hoops.com Team of the Week.

The d3hoops.com Team of the Week is made up of five Division III players from across the nation.

Lathan earned the award by scoring 29 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and getting 9 assists against NC Wesleyan.

Add to that a 20-point, 11-rebound outing against Christopher Newport and 17 points against Shenandoah and it’s clear why he is considered one of the nations best.

Lathan, who wants to become a physical therapist when he’s done lighting up opponents at Chowan, leads the USA South Conference in scoring at 21.7 points per game.

He is also fourth in rebounding at 7.9 per contest.

But even with those lofty numbers, he didn’t expect quite this much success so fast.

&uot;I just wanted to come in and play hard and try to pick up Coach (Jim) Tribbett’s system,&uot; said the Chesapeake, Va. native.

Coach Tribbett had nothing but praise to offer in regards to his hard-working freshman.

&uot;He works very hard,&uot; said Tribbett.

&uot;He can score, but he also defends well and crashes the boards.

This award is good for him and our basketball program here at Chowan.&uot;

It’s a program Lathan says he wants to see as a top-20, nationally recognized one before he leaves as a senior.

He feels he still needs to work on his defense and overall focus on the court.

If he continues to do so, coupled with his already 22nd in the nation scoring average, the sky is the limit.
