Marion J. Cockey

SUFFOLK, Va. – Marion Jordan Cockey, 89, a native of Sunbury, died December 12, 2003, at Obici Hospital. She was the widow of John Sothoron Cockey.

A graveside service was conducted Monday at Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Robert J. Parks Jr. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory was in charge. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to Main Street United Methodist Church, 202 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434.

Mrs. Cockey was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, the J. Lewis Rawls Sunday school class, Westover Garden Club, Jamestown Society and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include her children, John Sothoron Cockey Jr. of Virginia Beach and Marion Cockey of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Mary Cross Jordan; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Charles E. Falconer

CORAPEAKE – Charles Edward Falconer, 64, died December 8, 2003.

A funeral was conducted Saturday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville.

John F. Parker

SUNBURY – John Frederick &uot;Fred&uot; Parker, 73, a native of Gates County, died December 11, 2003, in his home.

A funeral was Sunday in Oak Grove Christian Church by the Rev. Garrett Lewis and the Rev. Sallye Hardy. Burial was in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Oak Grove Christian Church, Folly Road, Sunbury, NC 27979.

Parker, an active member of Oak Grove Christian Church, he had retired as an agriculture teacher having served in both the Charles City and Windsor, Va. school systems. After retirement, he owned and operated Twin Oaks Antiques and Flowers until his death.

Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth P. Harrison of Williamston and Jean P. Rusak of Jacksonville, Fla.;

Margaret R. Ward

CORAPEAKE – Margaret Rountree Ward, 91, a native of Gates County,

died December 11, 2003, in Nansemond Pointe Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Suffolk. She was the widow of Walter Aleck Ward Sr.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in Eureka Baptist Church by the Rev. Cameron Currin. Burial was in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad or to the building fund of Eureka Baptist Church.

For more than 60 years, she was an active member of Eureka Baptist Church where she had been a choir member and had taught Sunday school. She had served in leadership capacities in the Corapeake Extension Homemakers Club, the Gates County Council of Extension Homemakers Clubs and the NC Homemakers Association. A member of the Holly Rebekah Lodge of the Rebekah Assembly, International Order of Oddfellows of NC, she had served as district president and as president of the Rebekah Assembly of NC. Mrs. Ward was instrumental in organizing the Gates County Unit of the American Cancer Society and served as state director and president of the local chapter for a number of years. She had been a member of the Democratic Party since 1933 and for a number of years served as precinct vice-chairman and later as precinct chairman.

Survivors include her children, son, Walter A. Ward Jr. of Chesapeake, Va.; a daughter, Frances Ward Brooks of Raleigh; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Floyd C. Tann Sr.

COMO – Floyd Collin &uot;Buster&uot; Tann Sr., 76, a native of Northampton County, died December 11, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Nebo Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Holloman. Burial was in Jordan Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Winton. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her children, Floyd C. Tann Jr. of Murfreesboro, Princess Joyner and Ernestine Tann, both of Como; one sister, Pauline Eley of Murfreesboro; one brother, John Henry Tan of Murfreesboro; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Clinton G. Johnson

PENDLETON – Clinton George Johnson, 26, died December 9, 2003.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at First Baptist Church Severn. Burial was in New Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Newsom, Va. Faison Funeral Home, Seaboard, was in charge.

Clarence Pugh

ROANOKE – Clarence Pugh, 84, died December 6, 2003.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Seaboard. Burial was in the church cemetery. Faison Funeral Home, Seaboard, was in charge.

Hattie B. Newsome

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.

– Hattie Bell Newsome, 87, a native of Ahoskie, died December 10, 2003.

A celebration of her life will be conducted at noon Tuesday at New Rising Sun Baptist Church, 201 Patrick St., in the Berkley section of Norfolk by Elder Richard A. Groover Sr. Monroe and Carl Funeral Home, 1701 Wilson Road, Norfolk, is in charge. The family will assemble at 11 a.m. at the funeral home Tuesday for the procession.

She was a member of Queen Street Baptist Church in Norfolk.

Survivors include a daughter, Estella Newsome of Norfolk; her son, Ronald L. Newsome Sr. of Virginia Beach; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Celia F. Williams

EURE – Celia Felton Williams, 81, a native of Gates County, died December 14, 2003 in Guardian Care of Ahoskie. She was the widow of Clinton Eure Williams Sr.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Eure Christian Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Eure Christian Church or the American Cancer Society.

A homemaker, she was a member of Eure Christian Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra W. Rountree of Eure; a son, C.E. Williams Jr. of Gates; a sister, Mary Ellen Eure of Eure; two brothers, Elmore Felton of Eure and J.Z. Felton of Gates; and four grandchildren.

Terry E. Vogler

NORFOLK, Va. – Terry Edward Vogler, 44, a lifelong resident of Norfolk, died December 13, 2003 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

A graveside service was conducted Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norview Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Vogler was a retired events crewman at Norfolk Scope.

Survivors include his mother, Barbara Ann Johnson and his stepfather, Milton Johnson of Gates; his father, James Thomas Vogler of Danville; his brother, Jack Lee Vogler Sr. of Danville; and his sister, Debbie Willy of Ocala, Fla.

Linwood E. Darden

AHOSKIE – Linwood E. Darden, died December 12, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church by the Rev. Patrick Young. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include a daughter, Bettie Darden of Ahoskie; and one sister, Ella D. Beverly of Ahoskie.

Shirley H. Scott

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Shirley H. Scott, 66, a native of Hertford County, died December 9, 2003, at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Harrellsville, by the Rev. Robert Lewis. Burial will be in the Harrell family cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include a son, Thaddeus Scott of Harrellsville; a brother, George Harrell of Englewood, Calif.; and one grandchild.
