Andrew M. Combo

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Andrew M. Combo, 79, a native of Cofield, died November 20, 2003, in his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at 11 a.m. at New First Baptist Church Taylorsville, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Marcus Brown. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Combo had been employed for more than 35 years at Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter and fellowshipped at New First Baptist Church Taylorsville. He was a member of Truxton Chapter No. 199, Lodge of Masons.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys E. Combo; two daughters, Fern Moore and Cheryl Combo; two sons, Andre Combo and Troy Combo; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

Lillian Rountree

GATES – Lillian King Rountree, 83, a native of Gates County, died November 20, 2003, at Down East Health & Rehabilitation Center, Gatesville. She was the widow of Otis C. Rountree.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Eure Christian Church, Eure, by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to University Health Systems Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rountree she was a retired seamstress for Kelwood Corporation and a member of Eure Christian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Bazemore of Cofield and Lillie Mae Wiley of Elizabeth City; a son, Otis C. Rountree Sr. of Chesapeake, Va.; a sister, Cathryn King Winslow of Edenton; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Verdie Turner

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Verdie Lee Davis Turner, 88, a native of Northampton County, died November 16, 2003, in Kings Mountain. She was the widow William Lee Turner.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Parkview Baptist Church, Portsmouth by former pastor and friend, Dr. Darrel James. Burial was at Olive Branch Cemetery. Snellings Funeral Home Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel was in charge.

Mrs. Turner was a member of First Baptist Church of Gastonia and a former member for 54 years of Parkview Baptist Church in Portsmouth, where she was a volunteer on the kitchen staff and served as president of her Sunday school class for many years. She was retired from Leggett’s Department Store.

Survivors include a sister-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Bernard Slocum III

GATES – Retired U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Bernard Slocum III, 59, a native of Raleigh, died November 22, 2003, in his home. Slocum had served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 30 years and was a veteran of both the Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars. He had attended Kittrell’s United Methodist Church.

Survivors include

his wife, Mary Marie Slocum; seven daughters, Traci, Michelle, Melissa, Temple, Tatum, Jamie and Victoria; five sons, Bernard, Le- land, Thomas, Alan and Nathaniel; and 19 grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m.

Tuesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, by the Rev. Grace Dill. Following services, he will be cremated and inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Zane W. Martell

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Zane Wilkins Martell, 77, a native of Norfolk, died November 21, 2003, in Chesapeake. She was the widow of Vernon Castle Martell Sr.

Mrs. Martell was a retired clerk from the City of Norfolk, Public Works Department. She was a longtime member of Memorial United Methodist Church, and a member of the United Methodist Women, Marjorie Dana Tyson Circle, Altar Guild and Memorial Committee.

Survivors include two daughters, Debbie M. Bergey of Virginia Beach and Denise M. Futrell of Murfreesboro; one son, Vernon C. Martell Jr. of High Point; one brother, Ollie E. Wilkins of Norfolk; and six grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Brian Till and the Rev. John W. Cole II. Burial was in Riverside Memorial Park. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home was in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3513 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, VA 23513 or to Lee’s Friends, 618 Stockley Gardens, Norfolk, VA. 23507.

Joe V. Harrell

COLERAIN – Joe Vann Harrell, died November 21, 2003, at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Harrellsville, by the Rev. Vernon Lassiter. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include two brothers, Charles and James Harrell, both of Colerain; and three sisters, Marie Harrell and Janice Freeman, both of Durham and Beverly Cherry of Colerain.

Maggie Wiggins

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Maggie Britt Wiggins, a native of Hertford County, died November 22, 2003.

William D. Fairless

HARRELLSVILLE – William Deans &uot;Bill&uot; Fairless, 91, a native of Chowan County, died November

2003 in his home.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christian Harbor Baptist Church Cemetery. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Fairless was a retired self-employed painter. He was a Navy veteran of WWII.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy A. Jolly of Seattle, Wash.; a son, Charles W. Farless of Portland, Ore.; and several grandchildren.

Clara Vaughan

AHOSKIE – Mrs. Clara Vaughan, died November 24, 2003, at the Brian Center, Windsor.
