Averett blanks Braves

MURFREESBORO – The Averett University Cougars compiled 426 yards of offense while their defense held the Braves scoreless on their way to a 33-0 victory over Chowan here Saturday afternoon.
The Braves defense spent much of the game on the field, holding Averett to just seven points heading into the fourth quarter, but ran out of gas over the final 15 minutes of action where the visitors put the game away by scoring 26 points.
Meanwhile, the Braves tallied just 144 yards of total offense and spent just 20 minutes on the field while Averett controlled the game with almost 40 minutes of possession time.
Chowan’s offense was led by quarterback Taylor Furlough who completed 13 passes for 92 yards while throwing one interception. Joey Sulkowski had five catches for 32 yards.
The only score in the first half came at the 7:04 of the second quarter when Averett intercepted a pass on the Braves 40 yard line. Three plays later, Trace Smithers punched it in from the four-yard line for the 6-0 lead. James Thurnes point after attempt was good, giving the Cougars a 7-0 lead.
The Braves defense proved valiant once again in the third quarter, shutting the Cougars down. However, the Braves couldn’t seem to muster any offense to get on the board. The fourth quarter was all Averett as they scored 26 unanswered points to take the win 33-0.
Fresham Ronnie Fields had a stellar performance for Chowan’s defense, collecting 14 tackles, one sack and forcing a fumble. Matt Cunningham also had a solid performance with 13 tackles, one sack and one interception.
The win moved the Cougars to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in USA South play. The Braves fell to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in league play.
