Thomas O. Perry

EDENTON – Thomas Olds Perry, 72, died October 17, 2003 in Pitt Memorial Hospital.

A celebration of life was conducted Sunday in Edenton Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Pridgen. Burial was in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Evans Funerals and Cremations was in charge.

Perry served his country as an Army sergeant in the Korean War. He was a retired employee of Carters Ink Company, a member of Edenton Baptist Church and a member of American Legion Post 40.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Tynch Perry; a son, Michael Thomas Perry of Denver; two sisters, Paige Hollowell of Edenton and Mary P. Spivey of Hobbsville; three brothers, Glen Perry and Emmett Perry, both of Edenton and Ted Perry of Newport News, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Pearl W. Joyner

KELFORD – Pearl White Joyner, 79, a native of Bertie County, died October 18, 2003, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. She was the widow of Hersey Edward Pierce and Aubrey Joyner.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kelford Baptist Church by the Rev. Henry C. Boschen and the Rev. David Rimel. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge. Following the funeral service the family will receive friends from the home of Mrs. Joyner. Memorial gifts may be made to the Kelford Baptist Church, Kelford, NC 27847.

Mrs. Joyner was an active member of Kelford Baptist Church and retired from Ladd Lumber Company.

Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Madeline Davis of Windsor and Grace W. Parks of Hampton, Va.; a brother, Lewis Carrol White of Windsor; a stepdaughter, Jean Pruden of Gloucester, and one stepgrandchild.

Phillip A. Phelps

RICH SQUARE – Phillip Alex Phelps, 86, a native of Warren County, died October 18, 2003, at Autumn Care of The Roanoke Valley. He was the widower of Rose Marie Phelps.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Branch Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, by the Rev. Michael Currin. Burial will be in Ahoskie Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Branch Funeral Home from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Phelps was a World War II Army veteran, a member of the American Legion and retired with McPherson Beverages, Inc., and a member of Littleton Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Beverly P. Barnes of Hopewell, Va.; two sons, Phillip Wayne Phelps of San Antonio, Texas and Frederick Thomas Phelps of Tallahassee, Fla.; a sister, Bessie Callihan of Vaughan; and five grandchildren.

Dantice Gatling

ROXOBEL – Dantice Gatling, 58, a native of Bertie County, died October 16, 2003 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mill Branch Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Cherry family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Pearly Mae Gatling of Raleigh; a daughter, Mattie Jean Gatling of Raleigh; two brothers, Tom Gatling of Aulander and Clarence Gatling Jr.; one sister, Virginia Hardy of Kelford; and two grandchildren.

Kareem Warren

AHOSKIE – Kareem Warren, 21, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., died October 18, 2003, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at The Greater Wynn’s Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Lee. Burial will be in the Moore family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include his mother, Shirley Ray Moore; stepfather, Alvin Mizelle of the home; one son, Kareem Jermaie Warren Jr.; a stepson, Marquis Jones, both of Cofield; four brothers, Tracy Moore of Hampton, Va., James Warren, Dwayne Warren and Markel Askew, all of the home; maternal grandparents, Horace and Barbara Moore of Colerain; paternal grandparents, Joshua and Nan Smallwood of Newark, N.J.; and maternal great-grandmother, Annie Chamblee of Powellsville.

Harry L. Langston Jr.

GATES – Harry Lee Langston Jr., 88, a native of Gates County, died October 19, 2003, in Down East Health and Rehab, Gatesville.

Langston retired as ranger in Gates County for the NC Forestry Service, he was a member of Kittrell’s United Methodist Church, the Gates County Hunt Club, the Gates Ruritan Club, Ray’s Beach Fishing Club, and was a former member of the Gates Volunteer Fire Department. An Army veteran of World War II, he received three Bronze Stars and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained on Feb. 22, 1944 in Anzio, Italy.

He is survived by a sister, Maline L. King of Franklin.

A graveside service for family and friends will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Holy Neck Christian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Grace Dill. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. Friends may join the family at the home of Kenny and Cathy Jernigan, 387 Gatlington Road, Gates. The family asks that flowers be omitted and contributions be made to Kittrell’s United Methodist Church, Highway 37, Gates, NC 27937.

Gracie L. Liverman

GATES – Gracie Lee Liverman, 75, died October 18, 2003, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Clarence S. Newsome

AHOSKIE – Clarence Shaw Newsome, died October 15, 2003, at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Patrick Young. Burial will be held in the family cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Newsome was a deacon and member at New Ahoskie Baptist Church, a member of Jerusalem Lodge #96, member of New Ahoskie Baptist Church Men’s and Senior Choir, past president of United District Fair Association, former Ahoskie City Councilman, former representative of NC Mid East Regional Commission, member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., and member of Retired NC Teachers Association.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Warren Newsome of Houston, Texas, Dr. Clarence Geno Newsome of Raleigh and Dr. Curtis Wayne Newsome of Charlotte; two brothers, Louis E. Newsome III of Ahoskie and Carter W. Newsome of Wilmington; two sisters, Carol N. Hollins of Buffalo, N.Y., and Juanita Y. Moore of Norfolk, Va.; and eight grandchildren.

Genia V. Lawrence

WOODLAND – Genia V. Lawrence, died October 19, 2003, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.
