Braves falter at CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport University’s

football team defeated Chowan, 31-7, Saturday afternoon as the Captains remained unbeaten in USA South Conference play.

Mario Marin started the scoring for the Captains with 8:50 left in the first quarter on a three-yard touchdown run.

Jason Broskie’s point after attempt was good to give CNU a 7-0 lead.

The Captains increased their lead to 14-0 when Thomas Thornton broke several tackles and scampered his way 11-yards for the score.

Broskie’s PAT was good with 5:37 left in the first quarter.

Marin scored his 17th touchdown of his career when he broke loose on a 12-yard run with 10:41 left in the first half.

Broskie’s PAT was good for a CNU 21-0 lead.

Chowan got on the scoreboard when Taylor Furlough connected with Xavier Hair on a 26-yard touchdown pass.

Angel Bonilla hit the PAT and the Braves trailed 21-7 with 5:34 left in the first half.

Marin scored his third touchdown of the game with 11:17 left in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run.

Broskie hit the PAT and the Captains led 28-7.

Broskie would add a 22-yard field goal with three seconds left in the third quarter to finish the scoring.

CNU, ranked 22nd

nationally in the latest AFCA football poll, had 412 yards of total offense compared to 110 for the Braves.

The Captains also held the edge in time of possession holding onto the ball for 37 minutes and Chowan had possession for 23 minutes.

Thornton led all rushers with 60 yards on 13 carries.

Marin added 59 yards on 12 carries including his three scores.

Phillip Jones was 15-of-21 passing for 214 yards and one interception.

Jones’ 214 yards passing was a new school record.

The old record, also held by Jones, was 160 yards set last week against Greensboro.

Jones also tied a school record for completions with 15.

George Jones caught five balls for 79 yards and Marin added four catches for 25 yards.

The Captains are now 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the USA South.

CNU returns to action next Saturday as they host Methodist with kick-off set for 1 pm. Chowan will also play on Saturday when the Braves travel to Shenandoah University.
