James A. Williams Sr.

NORFOLK, Va. – James A. “Pudding” Williams Sr., 46, a native of Bertie County, died September 23, 2003 in Norfolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bibleway Holiness Church, 2520 Dexter St., Chesapeake, by Bishop John T. Reid. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. Family and friends will assemble at 707 W. 35th St. one hour prior to the service for the procession to the church. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby St. Chapel, is in charge.

Williams was a mechanic at Berkley Machinery. He was a member of Prayer and Deliverance Center.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Williams of Norfolk; one son, James A. Williams Jr. of the home; two daughters, Katressa Long and Jean Smith, both of Norfolk; one brother, Willie Williams of Baltimore, Md.; and six grandchildren.

Anna H. Croonenberghs

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Anna Belle Hill Croonenberghs, 86, a native of Corapeake, died September 27, 2003. She was the widow of Pierre Aristides Croonenberghs Sr.

Mrs. Croonenberghs, a lifelong advocate of literacy, was active in educational and reading programs in the Virginia Beach schools. She was a co-founder and first principal of Virginia Beach Friends School.

Survivors include three children, Dianne Croonenberghs Tilghman of Dunn, Robert Emile Croonenberghs of Maidens and Pierre Aristides Croonenberghs Jr. of Belews Creek; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Monday in Holy Trinity Chapel at Westminster Canterbury by the Rev. Dr. Stanley Sawyer and the Rev. Dr. Segar Gravitt. Burial was at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to The Anna Belle Croonenberghs Memorial Fund, c/o Proliteracy Worldwide, 1320 Jamesville Ave., Syracuse, NY 13210. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road, was in charge.

Nino Lassiter

ROXOBEL – Nino &uot;Bruno&uot; Lassiter, 47, a native of Northampton County, died September 26, 2003, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

James L. Dempsey

WINSTON-SALEM – James Lee Demsey, 52, a native of Hertford County, died September 28, 2003, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem.

Joseph C. Williams

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Joseph C. Williams, 84, a native of Bertie County, died September 26, 2003, at JB Johnson Nursing Home.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Weeping Mary Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnnie Cofield. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Williams was a self-employed retail store owner. He was a member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Patty Russell of Washington, D.C.; and two brothers, Octavius Williams Jr. and Humphrey Williams Sr., both of Hampton, Va.

Hamp M. Williams

LEWISTON – Hamp McCoy Williams, died September 26, 2003.

Cleveland Askew

POWELLSVILLE – Cleveland Earl Askew, died September 26, 2003, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Mary Drake. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include four sons, Cleveland, Matthew, Antwan and Kwame Askew, all of Powellsville; one daughter, Tomeka Askew of Powellsville; his parents, Thomas and Sarah Askew, both of Powellsville; and one brother, Thomas L. Askew Jr. of Powellsville.

Virginia Morris

AHOSKIE – Virginia Morris, died September 28, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
