Jannett S. Askew

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Jannett Skinner Askew, a native of Bertie County, died October 1, 2003. She was the widow of William Askew.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Second Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Geoffrey Guns. Burial was in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Graves Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Askew was employed with Norfolk public schools.

Survivors include a son, William Askew Jr. of Norfolk; a daughter, Jannette Ferguson of Virginia Beach; three brothers, John Skinner and William Skinner, both of Portsmouth and Joseph Skinner of Norfolk; three sisters, Fannie Brown of Suitland, Md., Barbara Partee of Alexandria and Ethel Horton of Bowie; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Lew F. Lassiter

WINDSOR – Lew Ferebee Lassiter, 81, a native of Bertie County, died October 4, 2003, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, Goldsboro.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Elm Grove Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Hugh Mizelle. Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. Walker Funeral Home was in charge.

Survivors include her sons, Ervin Lassiter of Colerain and Sidney Lassiter of Virginia; one brother, Joseph Lassiter of Colerain; two sisters, Rena Mizelle of Colerain and Virgie Hill of Ahoskie; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Beulah M. Vinson

MURFREESBORO – Beulah Mae Vinson, 80,

a native of Northampton County, died October 3, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Severn by the Rev. Elisha Barnes. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her children, Wilson W. Vinson, Jerry L. Vinson, Mary A. Vinson, Evelyn Vinson and Shirley M. Vinson, all of Murfreesboro; sisters, Luagussie Dandy of Durham, Dorothy E. Jenkins of Philadelphia, Pa., and Olivia D. Sharp of Portsmouth; two brothers, McKelly Vinson of Philadelphia and Gurnie Blount of Franklin; and two grandchildren.

Robert E Perry Sr.

WINDSOR – Robert &uot;Bob&uot; E. Perry Sr., 80, died October 4, 2003, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A graveside service was conducted Sunday at Capehart’s Baptist Church with Tim Parker. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Merry Hill Midway Fire Department, 109 NC 45 N., Merry Hill, NC 27957, or the Bertie Rescue Squad, Windsor, NC. Walker Funeral Home was in charge.

Perry was a self-employed farmer, a veteran of WWII, a member of Capehart Baptist Church and the VFW.

Survivors include his wife, Hallie Perry; a son, Robert E. Perry Jr. of Merry Hill; two daughters, Pam Miller of Windsor and Julia McEachern of Wilmington; two sisters, Dannie McClenney of Merry Hill and Thelma Forehand of Colerain; and six grandchildren.

Walter L. Edwards Sr.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Walter Lee Edwards Sr., 63, a native of Margarettsville, died September. 30, 2003 at Maryview Medical Center.

Edwards received his education in Northampton County public schools. Walter worked for Sprinkle Masonry for 30 years.

Survivors include a son, Walter L. Edwards Jr.; two stepchildren, Jajuan and Tameika Robertson; four sisters, Mary Mason, Anna Edwards, Lillian Bundley and Maria Sutton; and three brothers, William Edwards, Clifton Edwards and George Edwards

A funeral was conducted Monday at Corprew Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Milton R. Blount. Burial was in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.
