James Grigg

CONWAY – James Grigg, 81, died September 21, 2003, at High Point Regional Hospital, High Point. He was the widower of Betty Boone Grigg.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, by the Rev. Brian Dietrick. Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery, Weldon. Memorial contributions may be made to Creeksville Baptist Church.

Grigg was a World War II Navy veteran and a retired welder.

Survivors include a goddaughter, Debbie Knight; a sister, Minnie G. Carman of Columbia, S.C.; and a god-granddaughter.

James M. Wagenbach

FRANKLIN, Va. – James Martin Wagenbach, 74, a native of Barron, Wis., retired chief of Emergency Services for the City of Franklin, died Sept. 20, 2003 at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Linda Alvis. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family suggest memorials be made to Franklin Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 158, Franklin, VA 23851.

Wagenbach was retired chief of Emergency Services for the City of Franklin. He was a member of High Street United Methodist Church, a graduate of Franklin High School and an Air Force veteran. In 1965, Jim became chief for the Emergency Services for the City of Franklin and retired 33 years later in 1998. During his career Chief Wagenbach held many positions and received many awards throughout the state such as president of the State Fire Chief’s Association, the Virginia Civil Defense Association, Jaycee Distinguished Service Award in 1964, the First Citizen of Franklin Award in 1977, was inducted into the American Heart Association Hall of Fame in 1995, received the Governors Award in 1998, and in 2001 the City of Franklin created the James M. Wagenbach Career Staff Award of the Franklin Fire and Rescue.

Survivors include three brothers, Richard C. Wagenbach of Franklin, Dean F. Wagenbach of Como and Garold A. Wagenbach of Warren, R.I.

Patricia C. Whitley

WINDSOR – Patricia Cobb Whitley, 67, a native of Bertie County, died September 21, 2003 at her home. She was the widow of Sidney P. Whitley.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Elm Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul La Prevotte. Burial will be in the Cobb family cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Randy Cobb, 342 Askewville Rd., Windsor, NC. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Whitley was a homemaker and a member of Elm Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna W. Mizelle of Windsor and Annette Byrum of Galacia; one sister, Barbara Freeman of Windsor; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Josephine Tarkington

WINDSOR – Josephine Essey Tarkington, 91, a native of Laurinburg, died September 19, 2003, at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Clyde S. Tarkington.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Carol Noy and Dr. Carroll Tarkington. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Walker Funeral Home and at other times from Mrs. Tarkington’s home. Memorial gifts may be made to Cashie United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Tarkington was a graduate of ECU in 1937, was a retired school teacher and played the organ and piano for Cashie United Methodist Church where she was a member.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law.

Angela Jackson

ROCKY MOUNT – Angela Jackson, 47, died September 22, 2003, at Nash General Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Elsie V. Wynn

AHOSKIE – Elsie Vinson Wynn, died September 19, 2003.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church by the Rev. Patrick Young. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Wynn was a member of New Ahoskie Baptist Church.

She is survived by a brother, James Vinson of Miami, Fla.

Albert L. Edwards Jr.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Albert Lee Edwards Jr., 46, a native of Windsor, died September 17, 2003.

A homegoing service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, 2899 Welcome Road, Chesapeake. Interment will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Edwards was employed at Norshipco, a graduate of Oscar Smith High School and attended Tidewater Community College.

Carlton J. Slade Sr.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Carlton Slade, a native of Hertford County, died September 18, 2003.

A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Emanuel Baptist Church, Washington. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Slade Cemetery in Hertford County. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include three sons, Carlton J. Slade Jr. and Grover Calvin Slade, both of South Carolina and Sheldon Slade of Wilson; two daughters, Ruby S. Gambrell of South Carolina and Lois Schwaratz of Woodstock, N.Y.; and four brothers, Clifton Slade, Luke Slade and Dennis Slade, all of Temple Hill, Md., and Alvin Slade of Oxen Hill, Md.; one sister, Mildred A. Harrell of Washington; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

CONWAY – Lena Mae Jacobs Whitaker, 72, died September 21, 2003.

WINDSOR – Andrew Parker Jr., 64, died September 17, 2003 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.
