Fenton C. Bond Sr.

GATESVILLE – Fenton Coolidge Bond Sr., 78, a native of Gates County, died September 11, 2003, at W.R. Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lebanon Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial will be in the Jordan family cemetery, Hobbsville. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Edna J. Bond of W.R. Winslow Home; children, Fenton C. Bond Jr. of Gatesville, Roy D. Bond of Hobbsville and Danny F. Bond of Gates; sisters and brothers, Ulysses Bond of Philadelphia, Pa., Rachel Hathaway of Gatesville and Thelma Blakeney of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Joseph W. White Jr.

WINDSOR – Joseph Willard White Jr., 54, a native of Norfolk, Va., died September 12, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Walker Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Frank Stansbury. Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.

White was employed with Moon Engineering and present owner of J.W. White Company.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia G. White; a daughter, Renee W. Kilpatrick; a son, Joseph W. White III; a brother, James R. White, all of Windsor; and two grandchildren.

Mattie L. Schwalenberg

SUFFOLK, Va. – Mattie Louise Schwalenberg, 82, a native of Ahoskie, died September 12, 2003, in her home.

A funeral will be conducted t 11 a.m. Tuesday in Baker-Foster Funeral Home, Bennett’s Creek Chapel, Suffolk, by the Rev. Carl LeMon. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Baker-Foster Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Schwalenberg was a registered nurse and a member of Junto Women’s Club and Cedar Point Club.

Survivors include her husband, Frank A. Schwalenberg; two children, Mary Jo Schwalenberg of Virginia Beach and Frank C. Schwalenberg of Chesapeake; three sisters, Margaret Burden of Aulander, Carolyn Lawyer of Ahoskie, Mildred Staton of Goldsboro; three grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Calvin C. Shaw

BALTIMORE, Md. – Calvin C. Shaw, 17, died September 9, 2003 in Baltimore.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Interment will be in Lowe’s Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids.

Roland M. Harris Sr.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Roland M. “Donnie” Harris Sr., a native of Northampton County, died September 10, 2003 at his home.

A funeral was conducted Saturday in New Light Baptist Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Willie R. McNair. Burial was in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Seaboard.

Harris was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Harris; two daughters, Brenda Baynard of Chesapeake and Lakisha Williamson of Texas; two sons, Glen Harris of North Carolina and Roland Harris II of Chesapeake; two sisters, Lola Lassiter of Portsmouth and Geraldine Stephenson of Chesapeake; two brothers, Carl Harris of Norfolk and James Harris of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Doris Nipper

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Doris Lewis Nipper, 82, a native of Earlestown, England, died September 11, 2003 at her residence.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel, with the Rev. Deb Jenkins. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Nipper was a homemaker. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church., D.A.V. Auxiliary, Unit 41 and Women of the Moose, Ch. 966.

Survivors include her husband, Jerome W. Nipper Jr.; a daughter, Donna Riggs of Portsmouth; five sons, Denis Lewis of Gates County, Jerome “Jerry” Nipper of Portsmouth, Kenneth “Darrell” Nipper of Chesapeake, Raymond L. Nipper of Portsmouth and Rodney B. Nipper of Virginia Beach; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jean Chambers of Mercyside, England.

Ernest C. Askew

SUFFOLK, Va. – Ernest Cross Askew, 79, a native of Eure, died September 11, 2003. in Pitt

Memorial Hospital in Greenville. He was the widower of Eris Tripp Askew.

A funeral was conducted Monday in R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. Dan Armstrong. Burial was in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Askew was a World War II veteran, and retired from the Ford Motor Co. He was a member of Somerton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Charlotte A. Nelms of Greenville; two grandchildren, sisters, Gladys Green and Katie Stallings, both of Suffolk; and brothers, Glenn Askew and Darden Askew, both of Eure.

Gladys Pruden

FRANKLIN, Va. – Gladys Pruden, 85, a native of Gates County, died September 10, 2003 at Courtland Health Care Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in New Mount Joy COGIC, 307 County St., Suffolk, by Dr. William P. Wiggins. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery, Franklin. Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home, Franklin, is in charge.

Mrs. Pruden was a member of New Gospel Temple COGIC, Whaleyville, Va. She completed high school and was a District Missionary (emeritus).

Survivors include a son, Calvin Pruden of Hampton; three sisters, Dorothy Artis, Eunice Dickerson and Mary Williams; six brothers, Joseph Williams, James Williams, Hezikah Williams, John Williams, Paul Williams and Lemuel Williams; seven grandchildren;

and 15 great-grandchildren.

Lucille Fintch

PORTSMOUTH,Va. – Lucille Fintch, 80, a native of Conway, died September 11, 2003, in Sentara Nursing Center. She was the widow of Roy Fintch.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Fisher Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. D. Stefan Adams. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake.

Mrs. Fintch was a former member of St. John Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia and Martha; four sons, Charles, Roy, Elton and Calvin; a sister, Reatha; and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Erin A. Rosser

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Erin Alexandria Rosser, infant daughter of Marion Dale Rosser and Halee Davenport Rosser, died September 12, 2003 in Norfolk.

Besides her parents, Erin is survived by a brother, Matthew D. Rosser; a sister, Hannah N. Rosser, both of Chesapeake; maternal grandparents, Thomas and Shirlie Davenport of Merry Hill, and Rosa Edwards of Suffolk; and paternal grandparents, Dick and Pat Rosser of Atlanta, Ga., and June Dietz of Melbourne, Fla.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, the Rev. Randy Wooden. Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Great Bridge Chapel, is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, 601 Children’s Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507.

Katie M. Parker

MURFREESBORO – Katie Majette Parker, 94, a native of Hertford County, died September 11, 2003, at Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Nebo Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Tyner. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her children, Ernestine Hopkins of New York, NY, Mary Tyner of Murfreesboro and Shirley M. Burke of Landover, Md.; sisters and brothers, Raleigh Majette of Woodland, Clifton Majette Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa., and Mamie Mayer of Norristown; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
