Viola B. Elam

FRANKLIN, Va. – Viola Bynum Elam, 68, a native of Hertford County, died July 25, 2003 in Southampton Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Diamond Grove Baptist Church, Franklin, by Bishop Stephen Willis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Southampton Memorial Hospital. Elvin Vaughan Funeral Chapel is in charge.

Mrs. Elam was a graduate of Hayden High School in 1951, she received her associate degree in LPN in 1967. She retired from Southampton Memorial Hospital as a licensed nurse after 28 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Mason; three sons, Craig Elam, both of Manassas, Va, Gregory Elam of Wilkesboro and Darren Elam of Franklin; two sisters, Clasteen Bynum of Hempstead, N.Y. and Margaret Hill of Highland, Calif.; two brothers, Linwood Bynum of Hempstead and Raymond Bynum of Norfolk; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

James W. Humphrey

AHOSKIE – James Ward &uot;Jimmy&uot; Humphrey, born October 13, 1948, Fayetteville, Arkansas, son of Carolyn Cummings and James Humphrey, both deceased, and grandson of Zora Ward Cummings, Ahoskie, deceased, died July 10, 2003 in Ahoskie.

As requested, his body has been donated to a teaching school.

A memorial service will be scheduled after cremation.

Robert L. Clark

BRANCHVILLE, Va. – Robert Louis Clark, 67, a native of Southampton County, died July 28, 2003, in Southampton Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Rising Star Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Entrusting Hands Funeral Home is in charge.

Clark retired from Narricot Industries. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Seaboard.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Clark; one sister, Iona Gale of Hopewell; and two brothers, Jerome Clark of Newport News and Lucious Clark of Chesapeake.

Cornell M. Veale

WINDSOR – Cornell M. Veale Sr., 45, died July 26, 2003.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Point Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the cemetery of Church of God For All People, Windsor. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge.

Catherine Thompson

COFIELD – Catherine Thompson, died July 26, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted a 2 p.m. Saturday at New Holley Grove Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Tony Flood. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include four sons, Larry Thompson of Cofield, Carlis Thompson of Baldwin, Long Island, N.Y., Willis Thompson of Bronx and Ryan Thompson of Brooklyn; one daughter, Arleatha Allen of Cofield; two sisters, Helen Thompson of Cofield and Connie Mizell of Winton; and five grandchildren.

Wanda P. Britt

MURFREESBORO – Wanda Patricia Britt, died July 26, 2003, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church, Conway. Burial will be in the family cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include one daughter, Paulette Elizabeth Britt of Aulander; six brothers, Thomas Jennings of Jackson, Gregory Britt of Badin, Curtis Britt of Durham and Calvin, Alvin and Donnell Britt, all three of Murfreesboro; three sisters, Alice Parker of Rich Square, Ruth Hardy of Conway and Michelle Britt of Gaston; and one grandchild.

Roger E. Person

FRANKLIN, Va. – Roger Ell Person Jr., 74, a native of Southampton County, died July 28, 2003 at East Pavilion Nursing Home.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pittman Road Church of God Cemetery, Boykins. Entrusting Hands Funeral Home, Boykins, Va., is in charge. The family will receive friends at the home of Vicki Eley, 17282 Pittman Rd. The procession will take place at The Pittman Road Church of God.

Person retired from Wesley Community Center as a social worker. He was a member of Pittman Road Church of God in Boykins.

Survivors include his children, Dr. Ella P. Woodley of Roswell, Ga., Vicki P. Eley of Boykins, Min. Rodney M. Person Sr. of Pendleton and Ronney M. Person of Como; one sister, Elouise Smith of East Orange, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
