Dr. Benjamin E. Thompson Jr.

ROCKY MOUNT – Dr. Benjamin E. Thompson Jr., 78, a native of Rocky Mount, died July 22, 2003.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. August 3, 2003, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, 3313 Wade Avenue, Raleigh. A visitation and a reception will follow.

Arrangements by Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the UUFR or the Memorial Fund of Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.

Thompson received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge in WW2, taught public school for four years in NC and was a family physician in Cary for 31 years. He worked as a Hospice volunteer for several years after retirement and continued in this way to serve others in need.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Mitchell Thompson of Aulander.

Survivors include his wife, Renate Hoffmann Thompson; seven children, Benjamin E. Thompson III, William Mitchell Thompson, Wolfgang Haddon, Gisela Fleming, Dr. W. Scott Haddon, Ingrid Haddon, and Eric Haddon, all of Cary and Raleigh; 12 grandchildren; . his brother, Fred Thompson and a sister, Janie Thompson Lassiter .

William G. Brooks

NORFOLK, Va.

— William Gray Brooks, a native of Pitt County, died July 25, 2003, at his home.

The Cremation Society of Virginia, Virginia Beach is handling arrangements. Friends may sign the online guest register for Mr. Brooks at MDBUwww.cremate.orgMDNM. At his request, there will be no service, viewing or visitation in Norfolk. His ashes will be returned to the Brooks family cemetery in Greenville, N.C., where there will be a private memorial service and burial at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Freemason Street Baptist Church in Norfolk, the Norfolk SPCA or to Odyssey Hospice in Virginia Beach.

Brooks was a photographer in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a former owner and partner of Consolidated Photographic Industries in Norfolk, Bayside Boats in Virginia Beach, The Holiday Harbor Marina in Portsmouth, The Elizabeth City Shipyard in Elizabeth City and the Ahoskie Inn in Ahoskie. He was also a Commercial Real Estate Broker with Goodman Segar Hogan and was a past Deacon at Freemason Street Baptist Church in Norfolk.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Alyce Thornton “Lisa” Brooks; daughters, Joan B. Atkinson of Elizabeth City and Carolyn B. Bielling of Virginia Beach; three granddaughters; two great-grandsons; two sisters, Blanche C. Brooks of Greenville and Rachel B. Hord of Crescent City, Fla.; and one brother, Paul W. Brooks of Vale.

Bernice A. Sweat

NORFOLK, Va. – Bernice Adell Sweat, 81, a native of Northampton County, died July 24, 2003, at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Clementine Sweat; a son, Milton Sweat, both of Norfolk; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. The family will meet at 12:45 p.m. the day of the service. The family will receive friends at the home of Akyia Sweat (KK), 2873 Liberia Drive in Norfolk.

Rebecca A. Byrum

MERRY HILL – Rebecca Anne Byrum, 27, died July 26, 2003.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Capeheart Baptist Church Cemetery. Evans Funerals & Crematory is in charge.

James W. Humphrey

AHOSKIE – James Ward &uot;Jimmy&uot; Humphrey, died July 10, 2003, in Ahoskie.

A memorial service will be scheduled after cremation.

Daisy C. Barnes

JACKSON – Daisy Crowder Barnes, 89, a native of Ebony, Va., died July 26, 2003 at Hampton Woods Nursing Home, Jackson.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Galatia Baptist Church by the Rev. David Foster. Burial will be in the Barnes family cemetery. The family will receive friends at Galatia Baptist Church, Tuesday from 12:30 until service time and other times at the home of her granddaughter, Toni Saunders, 428 Carolina St., Roanoke Rapids. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.

Mrs. Barnes was a member of Galatia Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil J. Barnes of Potecasi; her daughter, Dean Barnes Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Virginia Harris; a brother, Roy Crowder, both of Virginia; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Theo L. Harrell

CHEASPEAKE, Va. – Theo L. Harrell, 83, a native of Bertie County, died July 27, 2003, at Sentara Village in Chesapeake.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Garrett Funeral Home.

Miss Harrell was a member of Colerain Baptist Church.

Survivors include a nephews.

Olga B. Burden

AHOSKIE – Olga Mae Burke Burden, 59, a native of Suffolk, Va., died July 25, 2003, at Obici Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Soul Saving Station Church by the Rev. Keith Urquhart. Burial will be in the Cherry family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Burden was a retired teacher’s aide for R.L. Vann School, home health nurse with Reliable Health Care in Ahoskie and was an inspector for Ramada Inn in Newport News, Va. She was also a member of Soul Saving Station Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Roaslind Edwards and Jennifer Burden, both of Ahoskie and Mona Britt of Suffolk; one son, Michael Burden of Williamsburg; her mother, Addie Reid Burke of Ahoskie; one brother, McCoy Burke of Elberton, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

Catherine Thompson

COFIELD – Catherine Thompson, died July 26, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Luke Futrell Jr.

WOODLAND – Luke Futrell Jr., died July 25, 2003, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Lebron Britt Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Futrell was a member of Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Luther Barnes and DaShawn Sutton, both of New York, N.Y. and Reginald Futrell of Woodland; three daughters, Geraldine Futrell of Clarkston, Ga., Dorothy Futrell of Plainfield, N.J., and Mary Barnes of New York; one sister, Josie Mae Britt of Murfreesboro; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Wanda P. Britt

MURFREESBORO – Wanda Patricia Britt, died July 26, 2003, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
