Virginia F. Phelps

SUFFOLK, Va. – Virginia Mae Furlough Phelps, 85, a native of Cherry, died July 12, 2003. She was the widow of Grady Warren Phelps Sr.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Nansemond River Baptist Church by the Revs. Timothy L. Piland and Robert J. Bennett. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery. Parr Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or Bennett’s Creek Rescue Squad.

Mrs. Phelps was a member of Nansemond River Baptist Church and the Esther Sunday school class.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Diane Bryant of Eure; a son, Grady Warren Phelps Jr. of Farmville; a sister, Mabel F. Chesson of Roper; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Willie D. Cummings

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Willie D. Cummings, a native of Windsor, died July 9, 2003, at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at New Bethel Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by Bishop James M. Whitaker. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake, Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon Wednesday. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Cummings was a member and deaconess of New Bethel Baptist Church, Portsmouth. She was first president of the Female Usher Board No. 2 and a member of many other organizations and activities at the church.

Survivors include her husband, Deacon Edward Cummings; three daughters, Joyce Ann Cummings, Edith D. Cummings and Doris A. Hylton, all of Portsmouth; two sons, Steve E. Cummings of Clinton, Md., and Amaziah Cummings of Portsmouth; two sisters, Odessa Hall of Portsmouth and Eunice Cooper of Durham; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Hubert N. Hill

AULANDER – Hubert N. Hill, 73, a native of Bertie County, died July 11, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander by the Rev. Charles Mosley. Burial was Monday at Knightdale Baptist Church Cemetery, Knightdale.

Hill was a retired truck driver for Winn Dixie. He was a member of Hassell Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Paul W. Hill of the home; a daughter, Diana Lynn Standerford of Nashville, Tenn.; and three sisters, Louvenia Belch and Alice Faye White, both of Powellsville and Carolyn Kay Ezelle of Charlottesville.

Lois F. Rankins

AHOSKIE – Lois Faye &uot;Tut&uot; Rankins, 42, a native of Bertie County, died July 10, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greater Wynn’s Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

She was a member of Greater Wynn’s Grove Church where she served as an usher. She was also a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Shawanda Norfleet and Latica Norfleet, both of the home; her parents, Turner and Gertrude Spruill Rankins of the home; her grandmother, Maggie Spruill of Powellsville; two sisters, Loretta Hyman of Hobgood and Gloria A. Williams of Powellsville; and two brothers, Willie Rankins of Boston, Mass., and Shelton Rankins of Colerain.

Viola B. Brown

AULANDER – Viola Bazemore Brown, 75, a native of Bertie County, died July 12, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at Conocanary Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayman J. Kirkman Sr. Burial will be in the Cherry Memorial Cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Brown was a member of Conocanary Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include her children, Linda Brown, Susan Vann, Sandra Kirkman and Cheves Brown, all of Fayetteville; three sisters, Vera Jennings, Marie Parker, Eloise Lucas and Doris Williams, all of Aulander; 26 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Lillie Selby

WAKE FOREST – Lillie M. Garris Selby, 74, a native of Northampton County, died July 11, 2003 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ballard Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Taylor. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Selby was a retired nurse. She was a member of Ballard Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Clifford Harrell of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four daughters, Sherl Armour of College Park, Md., Carolyn Gersch of Wake Forest, Joan Selby of Woodbridge, Va., and Myra S. Clayton of Greenville, S.C.; and a sister, Vida Pruden of Gates.

Joseph Reynolds

AULANDER – Joseph Reynolds, 79, died July 12, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Joyce T. Spruill

COLERAIN – Joyce Taylor Spruill, 53, a native of Martin County, died July 13, 2003.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Winton Church of Christ by Mr. Daniel Davenport. Burial will be private in the Spruill family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be made to the Colerain Rescue Squad, PO Box 397, Colerain, NC 27924.

Mrs. Spruill was a member of Winton Church of Christ and a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer Harden Spruill; two daughters, Candy S. Fulcher of Bassett, Va., and Christie S. King of Colerain; a son, Thomas H. Spruill of Colerain; her mother, Christine T. Taylor of Ahoskie; two sisters, Linda T. Askew of Ahoskie and Sally T. Keeter of Scotland Neck; three brothers, Willie Taylor of Aulander, Michael Taylor of Woodland and Jesse Taylor of Rocky Mount; and five grandchildren.
