PLEASANT HILL – A confrontation with Northampton County Sheriff’s Office deputies Friday night led to the death of a Pleasant Hill man.

NCSO Captain Courtney Williams said the sheriff’s office is not immediately releasing the name of the man who was shot and killed or the names of the deputies involved.

He said Sheriff Jack Smith will release a more detailed statement later and declined further elaboration.

Smith said in a statement released early this Sunday morning that the deputies, who were not injured, are on administrative leave under department policy pending investigation. Smith said it is protocol for officers to be placed on administrative leave in officer-involved shootings.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was called in by Smith to investigate the matter.

The shooting occurred shortly after 7:45 p.m. on Friday when deputies responded to Big John Store Road in the Pleasant Hill area on a domestic dispute call.

Williams said in the statement when deputies arrived they discovered a woman was assaulted by her husband during the dispute.

When deputies attempted to take the man into custody, a confrontation ensued resulting in shots fired and the man’s death.

More details will be published as they become available.
