Former coach faces student sex charges

HALIFAX – On Monday, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office announced that it had arrested Larry Donnell Edwards, 54, of Ahoskie, for taking indecent liberties with a student.

Edwards, a health and physical education teacher and long time coach at Southeast Halifax High School, recently retired, according to Dr. Elease Frederick, superintendent for Halifax County Schools.

The Investigation began in November 2015 by Halifax Sheriff’s Detective D.C. Dickens.

Halifax County Chief Deputy Bruce Temple said Edwards was charged with indecent liberties with a student, sexual offense with a student, and crimes against nature.

Edwards was given a $50,000 bond and a court date of March 23.

Temple said the investigation continues and may result in further charges.

He added that further details are unavailable because it is a continuing investigation.
