WINTON – Mr. Joseph McCoy Brown Jr., age 34 of Winton, NC, died at his home in Winton on September 25, 2014.

He was born on February 5, 1980 to Joseph and Lelia Butler Brown of Winton, NC. Joseph graduated from Hertford County High School where he studied auto mechanics under Mr. Harry King. He worked as a mechanic for numerous companies in Virginia. In North Carolina he worked for Strickland Auto Group and most recently with Carolina Automotive in Ahoskie, NC. He was an accomplished mechanic earning some forty-eight certifications under the General Motors Corporation.  Joseph had a great passion for cars and motocross, including both building and racing. He loved his family and his dog Kane very much and he will be missed by all that knew him.  He was a very good father and enjoyed playing video games with his son, “lil Joe”. Joseph was very proud of his Meherrin Heritage.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Mamie Simons Butler and James L. Butler; and paternal grandparents, Arlene Melton Brown and Joseph M. Brown.

Joseph is survived by his son, Joseph Wayne Brown of Colonial Beach, VA; his mother and father, Joseph and Lelia Butler Brown of Winton, NC; three sisters, Tonya Brown Cowan and her husband Robbie of Lewiston Woodville, NC, Theresa A. Langston and her husband Chris of Winton, NC and Tomika Joann Brown of Ahoskie, NC; one brother, Darryl McCoy Bazemore of Aulander, NC; seven aunts, Ethel Taylor of Norfolk, VA, Daffie “Kitty” Woldman and her husband Glenn of Richmond, VA, Patricia M. Reynolds and her husband Maurice of Ahoskie, NC, Patrina F. Brown of Ahoskie, NC, Sylvia C. Caudill of Whitakers, NC, Sharon G. Skala and her husband Steve of Ahoskie, NC, and Denise B. McAuly and her husband Darrell of Hope Mills, NC; nine uncles, Wayne M. Brown of Ahoskie, NC, Kelly L. Brown of Winston Salem, NC, Donald A. Brown of Winton, NC, Arnold L. Brown and his wife Stephanie of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Marcus O. Brown and his wife Allison of Midlothian, VA, Patrick B. Brown of Richmond, VA, and Elliott W. Butler and his wife Jean, Dennis R. Butler and Stuart Butler all of Gates, NC; two great aunts, Dorothy M. Wilson of Chesapeake, VA and Yvonne M. Baker of Hampton, VA; and one great uncle, Wayne D. Melton of Ahoskie, NC.  Also surviving is a special friend, Lynn L. Knewstep of Winton, NC and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at the Chapel of Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service in Ahoskie. Officiating were the Rev. William Reid and the Rev. James Brown. The interment followed at the Brown Family Cemetery.
