Arlene M. Richard

COMO – Arlene Marie James Richard of Como, NC went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the age of eighty-two years, eight months and twenty-two days.

Miss Arlene was born January 29, 1932 to the late William “Jack” and Lenore Kaltenhauser James in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Athletic and outgoing, she graduated from Wilson High School in 1949. On August 15, 1953 she married John Albert Richard. Together they made eighteen moves in twenty-two years and raised four children. John and Arlene retired to Frisco, NC on Hatteras Island and enjoyed fishing and walking the beaches.

Widowed in 1992 after thirty-nine years of marriage, Arlene remained on the Outer Banks Islands for several years. She traveled to South America and spent several summers exploring Alaska before relocating to Como, NC.  In later years she continued to enjoy nature by enjoying the flowers and hummingbirds in her own yard. Remembered for her sense of humor, she will be remembered and missed by those whose lives she touched.

She is survived by two sisters, Lavonne Knight and Donna Guptil; three children, Michael James Richard and wife Milicent Vaughen of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Michelle Richard of Como, NC, and Thomas John Richard and wife Kimberly Grubb of Bradenton, Florida; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by two sisters, a brother and her son, James Albert Richard.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at the Severn Mennonite Church with Pastor Dale Miller officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. The body will be cremated and buried in the Little Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Frisco, NC.
