WOODLAND – Joseph Henry Brown, 75, died peacefully at his home, May 14, 2013.

As a native of Menola, NC he had lived in Woodland for the past 20 years and was retired from the Department of Transportation after 26 years of service.  He helped organize and was a charter member of the St. Johns Volunteer Fire Department and was an active member of Pendleton Masonic Lodge #418 where he had served as Master of the Lodge several times.  He was member of the Menola Homemakers Association where he, faithfully, helped with their fundraisers and as an avid fisherman and hunter he belonged to the Roanoke Chowan Wildlife Club.  He was known for his mechanical abilities and for helping anyone who needed assistance to keep them going.

He had been preceded in death by his parents, James Robert and Velma Peede Brown; twin daughters, Nancy Carol and Katherine Ann Brown; daughter, Debra Jeffrey; and a brother, John Robert Brown.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Lucille Peede Brown of their home; daughter, Linda Newman (Rick) of Hopewell, VA and daughter Kay Carmichael (Chris) of Ayden; eight grandchildren, Amanda Casper of Hopewell, VA, Krystal Brown (Jonathan) of Ayden, T.J. Langley (Kari) of Greenville, Emily Langley of Ayden, Regina Harrell of Ahoskie, Kelly Branham (Patrick), Nikki Joyner and Shane Joyner all of Nashville; 11 great grandchildren; two brothers, T.R. Brown of Morehead and Jimmy Brown (Delores) of Aulander; and one sister, Jane Carter of Roanoke Rapids.

His funeral service will be held Friday, May 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Menola Baptist Church where he had been a life long member, 1012 Menola-St. John Road, Woodland, NC, and in lieu of flowers the family has requested that any memorial gifts be given to the church.
