AHOSKIE – Etta Otelia Hoggard Vaughan lived 88 years before she died on Saturday, December 15, 2012.

She was the second of 10 children born to John and Etta Hoggard of Windsor. When she was a teen her parents moved to Ahoskie and settled just outside the St. John community. It was there that she attended school, met her future husband, Andrew Jackson Vaughan, and raised their nine children.

While she remained a member of Refreshing Center Church of God in Christ in Windsor, and Andrew remained a member of New Haven Baptist Church, they attended Zion Grove Baptist Church for many years with their children.

In addition to farming, Etta worked in sewing factories for many years before she retired at age 72. Etta was an active member of the Eastern Stars, a member of the Board of Directors for Tri-County Credit Union and worked in the church with the Willing Workers and on other church committees. She also did a little traveling over her lifetime to places like New York, Atlantic City, New Orleans, Atlanta, Tampa, South Dakota, and cruising to the islands.

Following significant hearing loss and a heart attack, she moved into Guardian Care Nursing Facility in 2008 where her husband had gone to live three years earlier.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Etta Hoggard; her brothers, John Henry and Robert Hoggard; her sister, Louise Hoggard; her daughter, Thelma Vaughan; and her son-in-law, Thomas Satterthwaite, Sr.

Remaining to celebrate her life are her husband, Andrew Jackson Vaughan; and their children, Elmer (Ethel Simmons) Vaughan, Dora Satterthwaite, and Andrew Kirtz (Julie Adams) Vaughan of Hampton, VA, Mildred Conner of Charlotte, Cynthia Vaughan of Wilmington, Vivian Vaughan of Atlanta, GA, Vickie Walker of Fayetteville, and Shelia (Jamison) Eley of Winton. Her surviving siblings are Mary Scott, Arthur Hoggard (Georgana Anderson), and Joyce Fleetwood of Portsmouth, VA, Wesley (Lorraine Anderson) Hoggard of Tampa, FL, Jean (Joe) Finnell of Ahoskie, and Lillian (Charles) Williams of Richmond, VA; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 21, 2012 at New Bethany Baptist Church, Harrellsville. Burial will be in the New Haven Baptist Church Cemetery in Murfreesboro.

Reynolds Funeral Home of Ahoskie is handling the arrangements.
