Those wishing to file as a candidate for the upcoming municipal election can do so beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, July 7 through Friday, July 18, ending at noon that day.

Municipal elections give citizens the opportunity to elect the local governing body for their towns, often including seats for mayor and town commissioners/council members. Terms usually last either two or four years, varying by municipality. All municipal seats are nonpartisan.

Any qualified voter, who is at least 21 years of age, may be elected to a public office. However, for a municipal office, the candidate must also be a registered voter in the municipality or the municipal district.

The following towns in Bertie County will conduct municipal elections in 2025:

Askewville (mayor and three town commissioner seats)

Aulander (three town commissioner seats)

Colerain (mayor – to fill a two-year unexpired term – and three town commissioner seats)

Kelford (mayor and five town commissioner seats)

Lewiston Woodville (mayor, one town council seat for the Lewiston District and one town council seat for the Woodville District)

Powellsville (mayor and three town commissioner seats)

Roxobel (mayor and four town commissioner seats)

Windsor (mayor and two town commissioner seats)

NOTE: The towns of Powellsville and Windsor vote according to the Nonpartisan Primary and Election Method. If the number of candidates for the contest is greater than twice the number of seats to be elected, there will be a Primary Election. The Primary will trim the number of candidates down to twice the number of seats. For example, if there are seven candidates running for two seats, the top 4 vote-getters in the Primary would advance to the General Election. If needed, the Primary Election would occur in October before the General Election in November.

The filing fee is $5. Candidates can file at the Bertie County Board of Elections office, located at 210 West Watson Street in Windsor. Call 252-794-5306 for additional information.

All six of Hertford County’s municipalities will hold elections this year. The following towns will have these races on the ballot:

Ahoskie – town council (one seat for Ward A, one seat for Ward B, and one At-Large seat)

Cofield – mayor, and five town council seats

Como – mayor, and four town council seats

Harrellsville – mayor, and five town council seats

Murfreesboro – mayor, and five town council seats

The winning mayoral candidate and the two council candidates with the next highest total of votes will serve a two-year term. During the next municipal election in 2027, those three seats will then be elected for a four-year term.

The filing fee is $5 for all candidates except those running in Ahoskie and Murfreesboro. The filing fee for Ahoskie town council candidates is $31.69 and Murfreesboro town council is $30.90. The filing fee for Murfreesboro mayor is $49.
