AHOSKIE – The Dr. J.D. Weaver Scholarship Foundation has announced that the 2025 scholarships will be awarded during a 10 a.m. service on Sunday, July 13 at New Ahoskie Baptist Church.
Donations to the scholarship fund are still being accepted. Those wishing to contribute to the Weaver Foundation can mail a check to Dwight Ransome, 1209 Tennyson Lane, Windsor, NC 27983 or call 252-325-2020 to make arrangements for a contribution to be picked up by a board member.
Every two years, the Foundation awards scholarships to high school graduates in Bertie, Hertford, and Northampton counties.
Prior to his death in 1998, Dr. Joseph Dudley Weaver served as a medical doctor in the Roanoke-Chowan area over a span of five decades.
Soon after being licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina and Virginia, World War II broke out and, like many men of what is hailed as the greatest generation, Dr. Weaver served his country. Commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the US Medical Corps, he proudly served with the 372 Second Infantry Regiment for two years.
Upon returning to Hertford County following the war, Dr. Weaver opened a medical clinic on Maple Street in Ahoskie.
Driven by a desire to help the entire community, he later joined the practice of the Roanoke-Chowan Medical Center. He also served Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in a number of capacities; was Medical Director of I.B.P.O.E. of W. Grand Lodge; was the physician for the Hertford County Law Enforcement Center; and served as Medical Examiner for both Hertford County and Gates County.
