Extreme Heat Warning issued locally

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for today (Tuesday) until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

The warning is for dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 110 or greater expected in Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Gates, Hertford, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, and western Currituck counties.

Today’s high temperature is expected to be 98 degrees.

Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.

Those living in the warning area are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The heat will stick around for the remainder of this week as well as into the weekend.

Wednesday’s high will be 97 degrees. Thursday’s high temperature is forecasted at 94 followed by three successive days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) where the high will be 92. Skies will be mostly sunny throughout the period.

Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 70s.
